Been away from a computer for a few days so have some catching up to do on this thing! On sunday we had the most amazing experience at the football! A full house at the biggest stadium in Brazil, the Maracana, for the replay of the final of the state championship between Flamengo and Botafogo with the first game tied 2-2. As you can imagine the atmosphere was electric with flares, huge flags and banners, chanting and fireworks! The game itself was fairly poor until midway into the second half when the first goal went in. The atmosphere stepped up a notch at this point with the ground almost rumbling from the noise! This was quickly followed by an equaliser from Botafogo, who then took the lead soon after. It looked like they were heading for the victory when Flamengo scored a wonder goal from 30m out! Then came the controversy botofogo scored, but then it was ruled offside however the striker was sent off for a second yellow(either for playing on after the whistle or dissent!). Replays showed that he was in fact onside! A penalty shootout followed which Flamengo won and as you can imagine the celebrations that ensued were very loud and colourful! After the game as we were coming out of the stadium we had to take cover as a fight broke out (which we never actually saw, only the people running away) however this was swiftly dealt with by the police and we were on our way! That evening we played poker with some of the guys and although I came in a lame 4th of 6 Rory took home a cool R$30 for winning! We are currently in Ilha Grande which is a remote island south of Rio with no cars or roads! The internet cafe is closing, however, so that will be one for another time!
