I am playing catch up on some of the countries I failed to write anything about. We were in Botswana for about a week and had a great time going to the Okavanga Delta. This is a huge area that is similar to the everglades and has papyrus reeds and bamboo shoots high out of the shallow waters. The channels all looked similar to me, but the guides know the area like the back of their hands and so could find their way around.
The only way to get around is by speedboat in the deeper areas and by Macau canoe in the shallow areas. The canoes are pushed around on poles by the guides. My guide was called Tarzan, on account of him having stabbed a crocodile that attacked him during his teen and which left a huge teeth scar across his shoulders.
Unfortunately this meant that Tarzan thought that he was invincible and would take us scarily close to the hippos who live in the water. At time this led the huge males to do mock charges at us. This involved them running under the water before bursting out and leaping out of the water in our direction. Tarzan found this hilarious, but I was less amused!
We stayed in a great little lodge that is based on a small island and had outdoor bamboo hut showers and hammocks. One night a snake got into the bathroom and wrapped itself around the bottom of the toilet. Tarzan and two of the other men came to get it. It turned out to be a young Mozambiquan Spitting Cobra and is apparently very poisonous.
That along with the biting spider that came into our tent and the hippos lurking outside that you could hear groaning all night, meant that this place felt like the most isolated place I had stayed in.
However, it was also incredibly beautiful, had the most wonderful sunsets and felt extremely peaceful and relaxing.
