Hello all. So i've been away from any serious civilisation ans working like a trooper in the banana plantations in oder to earn some cash and to get my second year visa signed off. when i first arrived all i heard was 'winge winge winge' and everyone was half crippled from carrying big piles of bananas. i had no idea what was about to happen. I was lucky and mananged to get given work from the hostel on my second day. i had to sort bananas on a conveyor belt, making sure they were'nt bruised for 8 hours.... yes, 8 hours! i was over it after the first 10 minutes. luckily the next week i was given a different job. i had to help plant the new trees/plants in the paddock. a 4.30am start was meant to help us as this way it would be cooler, but by 8.30am the sun would beat down and before i knew it i was sweating cobs! there was no shade and the temperature reached 36 degrees by mid-day. our boss only let us have half an hour-ish for lunch breack and you had to gulp down as much water as possible inbetween times. i would drink about 6 litres before 2pm when we clocked off. we would go home via a fresh water creek for a fully clothed submerge!!!!
the next week we had another job - de-leafing, which in volved slashing down leaves from the banana trees so only healthy nes were growing. i enjoyed this.... again very hot and sweaty and i nearly got killed again, not by a snake or spider (even though i've seen a few), but by a swam of bees that i disturbed when i cut down a leaf. i was watching them fly everywhere until my boss shouted 'sam! get up here the bees will swarm you!' naturally i panicked and legged it up the row of trees!
so nearly xmas and was planning on heading down to sydney, but i've had a invite from a local group of really friendly people to go to there place for the day. they have a big house with a fresh water creek at the bottom of the garden and i figured that this would make a better day than being in a big hot city. i'm starting to become more an more hesitant to moving down to the cities after experiencing such natural beauty up here. the tropical surroundings and creeks as well as the wildlife and good people are gently sucking me in. i may go to sydney for new year..... i'll keep u posted!
