Bangkok- OH YEAH WE ARE NOW ONLY 6 HOURS AHEAD (this bit by sam)
Well after we landed we went through customs which was pretty easier, apart from the pushy chinese people behind us, you have to have your photo taken when you get there which isn't great when you have 3 bites on your head- oh well. Then we got a taxi to our hostel which again was pretty easy, the taxi driver was nice think he wanted a tip, but we didn't give him one, lol- we arrived the the hostel about 2 am and we were greeted with a ladyboy on reception- then we went to our room which is a lot more standard that we are used to, 2 beds a bathroom and it is very small with a fan- but not to bad really. As you can imagine we were pretty tired so straight to bed, although it was difficult to sleep as it was so hot.
The next morning we woke up early even though we hadn't set an alarm because of the heat. We went to have breakfast at the rooftop restaurant at our hostel and then decided what we were going to do for the rest of the day. We decided we were going to walk down Koh San Road the main backpacker road in Bangkok- however we soon learnt it is Thailand new year and they celebrate by having a big water fight in the middle of the street and throwing flour at you as well. SO me and Tess decided after little sleep we weren't really in the mood for this so we got a tuk tuk to the weekend market (chatutarek) which we were planning to do the next day. We knew it was going to be a big market but I still don't think we were prepared for the size of it. We had decided that we needed to buy some clothes that were lighter to be able to cope in this heat and to be honest we did quite well- we got dresses 3 pound- amazing. and we both made a purchase for home as well oooops. We were so pleased with the market that we have no re arranged our trip so that we can come back to bangkok on a weekend just before we come home so we can buy lots (something tells me our bags are going to be full of lots of new things when we get home.
We left the market after 4 hours of heat and headed back to the hostel and changed our room to one with air con as we couldn;t cope with another night being as hot as we were. we updated our blog which i am sure that you have noticed and then went for some food- again on the hostels rooftop restaurant. As we were still tired we were in bed by 10pm lol.
SUNDAY 13TH APRIL, OUR SECOND FULL DAY IN BANGKOK - by tess
(still rubbish keyboards, so as always ignore the typos!)
we got up today, a better niight sleep with our air con, though it was a bit arctic! better than sweaty though! lol. we actually fell back asleep after our alarms, lol, and by the time we woke up dragged ourselves out of bed and went for 'breakfast' it was bout 11:30, so once again, continental breakfast on the cards...toast, tea, fruit and coco pops! mmm.
we decided we would today avoid koa sahn roa again (water fights, new year, it was odfficialy new year today here and everyone celebrates with a massive water fight and flower paste for some reason, fun if ur in the mood, near on prison sentence for GBh if your not!) and instead go to the grande palace we were told was good to see, and also attempt to get a boat ride along phraya river to chill out and escape chaos. o were we mistaken!
after askin in reception how to get to either we made a b-line for a tuttut to take us to the palace, randomly bumping into jamie from our china intrepid group right outside the hostel as he was coming here to eat! small world!we got squirted with a few water guns along the way. we got there, 200 baht lighter and went to the entrance... to be told 'no sexy'... we had to rent clothes from the palace bit to cover up basically, great as sam was wearing shorty shorts and a vest, and me a boob tube summer dress, ready for the heat and the odd water squirt... instead we had to pu on someone elses sweaty clothes... a long wrapover skirt and a yellow mens shirt...we looked hot, not! we were hot though! lol. we went in, wandered around, took some photos of sparkly architecture and wall painmtings and then, well, we were on our way again. it was nice there and sparkly, but i was already a bit bored of temples n palaces from china, but i liked the sparkliness, and the fact it was smaller than the ones in china. it was nice to get back into our wn gear, evem if it they were damp, yum.
we managed to find our way (thanks to sam, a local and a map) to the river, where we got even more water squirted at an TIPPED on us... i wanted to punch a man who tipped iced water down my back and basically soaking my knickers too, i felt great, that man made me very angry! we found somewhere to book a river ticket thing,. sghoul hav bin 1000 baht each for an hour, we got it for 500 each, robbers! i cant remember the things we actualy passed on the boat ride, i did pick up a leaflet before hand s i could remember... but that leaflet is now wringing wet.. i think some kinda important buildings, lol, and a floating market, o and some fish, lol.
the boat ride was not the relaxing sightseeing trip i anticpated... it was just me sam and some other bloke... and we got DRENCHED!!! do not go anywhere in thailand btwn the 13th-16th april unless you are in full raincoat poncho or want to get involved in probably the worlds biggest waterfight. note to self!!!! the local thought it a gerat laugh to throw buckets of water, as well as the od water gun squirt or hose pipe, over us as we sat helpless on a boat... gits! excuse my french! we were literallly wringing wet, head to toe, with puddles of water on us, it was exactly as if we had gone swimming fully clothed. not impressed. i just wanted to relaX and instead i was turning green and getting into she-hulk mode. sam wasnt as bad as me but i think even she got a bit annoyed by it, thanks to the hostel for giving us little plastic bags to put our valuables in which we accepted unaware of how important they were! sams phone still managed to get wet though but i think its still alive!
after the boat ride we got back to the main road but a tutut wouldnt take us, so we walked for a bit, i had to go for a wee in a street vendor place, nice, and we walked a bit further before eventually getting a tutut back to our hostel, where we went up to the roof top to dry and i bought a pineapple slushy n sam a salad! lol. then we had to head back out to book our train to changmai for tomorro night... ABSOLUTE CARNAGE OUTSIDE! the streets were rammed and i mean, like ants! and everyone was drenched and covered in four paste carrying their own malicious supples of the stuff and tipping it all over us. i hated it! sam was again a little more tolerant, bt i met yet another man i wanted to punch, and instead i yelled at him a bit and shouted at him for knocking my glasses off my head. god he made me so angy! lol. i seriously idnt kno i had this much anger in me! lol. we gave up on the booking as we only found 1 travel agents that was ubbish and couldnt get thru the streets to where we mighgt find more. so we have to get up early tomorro to do that instead.
back at the safe water free hostel we sat and dried a bit gain, then ordered some tea. and watched a bit of ghost rider on the tv. lol. and thats your lot for today. its now 9:30, im shattered, a lot calmer and still carrying my unwanted china-fat!!! we have to be up at about 8 to ring the train and bus station to see if we can get to chang mai tomorro night, then make our way through thailand new year water festivities to go book. (really not looking forward to that!) if we cant get on anything for tomorro night we have to stay another nigt in water fight hell, lol, (i kno, i need to lighten up. but i think its too late now,. its under my skin!) then try get away the foloowing night. fingers crossed folks.
and that, my friends is bangkok, hot, wet and a bit hectic! sprkly palaces, empty boat journeys and of course the market where im soooooooooooo excited to be going back to... the highligt of my trip aside from all the massages i intend to get in the south islands! lol.
bye for nw everyone, sorry for the lack of photos, nowhere will uplooad them, so iv had to buy my second memory card since bein away to keep all my photos on! will upload asap. much love xxx
