Hi Everyone! This weekend we have been away at Fraser Island for a 2 night 3 day self drive tour. Fraser Island is the worlds biggest sand island with a rainforest on top, don't ask how a rainforest grows out of the sand we have no idea! It was really cool to drive on because there is no tarmac so we were really off roading! We were put into groups of 9 and sent over on the ferry, our first task was to drive to lake Mckenzie in the centre of the island. We thought it would only take 10 minutes but it really took half hour, this place was massive! The lake was beautiful, the water was so clear and because it waas fresh water you don't get salt in your eyes there was a lovely white beach there too. After that we drove to the eastern beach and set up camp for the night, we had our BBQ but we had guests! Dingos! The little wild dogs were sitting in the bushes waiting for a chance to grab some food. Lucky he got bored and walked off but the night was a little scary thinking of those guys outside.
The next day we went north to Eli Creek it was supposed to be a nice stream to walk along but because it was cold it wasn't that much fun. We then went north to the Maheno Shipwreak, the coloured sands and Indian Head were we saw a sea turtle. the next stop was the Champagne pools but the root was blocked by two pickups stuck in the sand, we thought twice about wether or not we wanted to go but we gritted our teeth and went for it, It was quite scary and it felt like we would tip over but we made it in the end. The Champagne pools was worth it too as the waves crash over the rocks it looks like Champagne, we attemped a swim but it was a bit too cold. That night we spent on the beach again it was really windy and our tent almost blew away but after a few drinks we didn't care!
The next day we went to Lake Wabby, it took us 20 minutes to get down there and the water was a bit green and murky so we didn't swin for long. The next stop was central station in the middle of the island. It was quite cool seeing the rainforest from there and there was a nice creek going through the middle making it look like a postcard. We almost missed the ferry home but we just made it with seconds to spare.
We really enjoyed our time on the island and it made much more fun camping out although I don't think we could of done another night (the sand gets everwhere!) All the people in our group were really nice hopefully were going to meet up with a couple of them in Sydney and one of the girls lives in L.A so she said she'll show us around!
Tonight we are going to Rainbow beach (only for one night) then we are off to Brisbane!
Love to you all! Justin and Sam xxx
