ASSISI (Ah-SEE-zee)
Up- checked out - bought lunch - on the train by 9:45. I am looking forward to a smaller town versus a big city for a while. Caught the bus to town, found the Tourist Information and checked into a great little hotel la Fortezza with a HUGE bed, personal bathroom, breakfast, noon tea, and free WIFI and a "Rick Steves" book discount! I feel like I'm in the lap of luxury after chilling out in the last scrubby hostel. Went for a walk around town and checked out the Minerva Temple right next door and the St. Francis Basilica! Beautiful upper and lower churches with incredible frescoes, but can't take any pictures. There was a Thunder and lightning/ hail/rain storm while I was there that was impressive and made the Umbrian hillside look all that more amazing! It's no wonder St. Francis is known for his love of birds/animals and environment...the birds sing so beautifully and the view is astounding. I will have to work hard to try to capture a picture that looks as nice as real life does. Dinner tonight at Ristorante Taverna Dei Console was a Panette alla moda di norcia (small penne pasta with cream, sausage and truffle). It tasted like the best stroganoff you've ever had and the truffles must be great because I mopped the plate with bread...some local red Umbrian wine topped it off. Great hearty meal after a rainy cold day of travel.
Tomorrow Plans: Go to San Damiano (where St. Francis re-built his church), Rocca Maggiore (castle ruins) and St. Claire's Basilica.
