Lop Buri is a town so small our travel book did not have a map of it, but explained that everything was easy to find. We took a 3 hour train from Bangkok here and arrived in the early afternoon. Within a 5 minute walk from the train station we found a nice place to stay. It was a small bungalow set facing a courtyard among other places like it. We dropped our bags off and went looking for monkeys.
We didn't have to look for long, sitting out side of our door was a monkey licking out an empty slushy cup. Above him were alot of them playing and chasing each other on the power lines. As we started to look around it became apparent that we were surrounded in them in every direction and none of them payed attention to us. From there we headed straight for a temple, the one we have heard is covered in them, and this was very true. When you buy your ticket here a guide walks with you and makes sure the monkeys don't bother you. Here there were more than imaginable crawling over every part of the building, and alot of older ones caring for small babies.
The following day we woke up early to go see the monkeys being fed. The local people designate a few times a day to feed the monkeys various fruits so that they are full and don't hassle or attack the people in the town. This was a hillarious sight! They were eating and playing and swimming in large basins of water. We watched the smallest monkey try to eat a banana that was clearly to big for him, and Dean will agree it was possibly the cutest thing ever. We were handed rambutans (a spiny fruit) to toss for them and they caught and tore into them right away waiting for another.
When we returned to our guest house the manager told us that 1 day a week the whole city gathers for a large market spanning a few blocks down the street we were staying on. We spent a good part of the evening walking up and down this looking at and trying some delicious food. We went to the train station to plan how to move on from the town and decided on a 16 hour train ride south to the peninsula of the country where we would hop a ferry to the islands. We drank and played games for the rest of the evening, all the while getting very excited to start island hopping in the sun.
