Hugh, Anne and Hector's Sailing Adventures
Hi folks
We are now in Portugal and I am writing this after a long and bumpy day in which we came from Aveiro to Peniche. It has been a very dull grey day and the waves were huge - not a lot of fun.
The Portuguese stretch has been fairly typical Atlantic weather; we've had mist, big rolling seas and a fairly strong afternoon breeze most days. We have had some good sailing in the afternoons - 8 knots under spinnaker, and more goose-winging than I would like.
Getting in and out of the Portuguese harbours is fairly hairy as you have to come through large rolling breakers in the shallower waters - its quite exciting at times - but Hector definitely doesn't like these conditions.
Eating lunch has also been a bit of a trial at times - you need one hand for the fork, one for the plate and that still allows the food or (worse) the beer to go sliding into oblivion when the waves roll under the boat.
The main plan for now is to get Tim to Lisbon in time for his flight home, so we have been doing fairly long days with very little shore time - a pity really as I'm sure we are missing out on some very interesting places. Hugh keeps reminding me that we can visit these places on our way back to the UK - but I don't remember signing up for that trip!
We should arrive in Lisbon tomorrow and I am looking forward to a few days there - to catch up on provisions, laundry and hopefully some sightseeing.
Anne
