Hugh, Anne and Hector's Sailing Adventures
Hi folks
Well you can tell we are now in cruising mode as I've been too lazy to send any updates - its all mañana, mañana.... We had an uneventful rounding of Cape Sao Vicente and arrived in the Algarve just over a week ago. The weather is gloriously hot and sunny and I've been busy making sun screens for some of the hatches as the interior temperature of the boat soars to 35°C in the afternoon and Hector sweats it out in that fur coat he wears, although he is trying to shed as much of it as possible!
An unlikely plan made in the (SQA IT) office in April came to fruition this week as we managed to meet up with Lorraine and her family in Albufeira Marina. One hair-raising taxi ride for them and they were aboard and bravely agreeing to come sailing with us. The weather was very calm, but with the usual Atlantic swell, conditions were a bit difficult for Luke and Zack and we returned to the marina for lunch. Hugh gave the boys outboard driving lessons in the dinghy in the afternoon that were a great success and they even made it out of the harbour to power through some waves (I don't know who had the most fun but the boys had definitely found their sea legs by then).
Lagoon life as Hugh was mentioning is very peaceful, except on a Sunday when most of the population of Portugal come to the Algarve for water sports (or so it would seem). In the lagoon at Alvor, we were buzzed by paragliders, windsurfers, waterskiers, jet skiers, kite surfers, fishing boats and motor boats, nearly all of which cause the anchored boats to rock and roll with their wake.
Fergus and Julie have been cruising with us this week and we are about to head back to Faro (Hugh is reading the tidal prediction data very carefully) where they depart and we are joined by Alex and Ruby for our passage through the Straits of Gibraltar and onwards to Palma.
