Sally's Adventures in South East Asia
Kanchanaburi is a very chilled out pretty little town about two hours west of Bangkok. It is infamous for the "Bridge over the River Kwai" and a ride over it and a visit to the wartime museum is a must. The graves of the young American and European men who lost their lives building the bridge as Japanese prisoners of war is harrowing. The food is incredible, the people very friendly and the guesthouses cheap and immaculate. Whilst here, Clare and I also went rafting down the river and went elephant riding for an afternoon. I also took a Thai cookery course. I figured that my friends back home would at least expect some decent Thai food cooked by me after my two month stint in Thailand. I can now cook a great Thai red curry, Pad Thai and Tom Yung Kung soup. The bars are very cool here and one can expect to see a man with his elephant selling sugar cane on their way back to their guesthouse - love it here!!!
Next I will go back to Bangkok so I can pick up an overnight sleeper train to Thailand's second city, Chiang Mai.
