Day 1 geared up, fortified with white cheese and jam, hot milk (my answer to no Gluten, no caffeine) we are wandering around SJPP looking for the Way to Santiago. Those Asians with the big packs must be going the wrong way so we won't follow them.
Napoleons route over the top is closed with snow - severe disappointment, shall we wait a day? Nah it's raining quite hard and the thunder is circling the mountain tops, lets skedadle up the road alternate.
Chatted to happy Frenchman, happy Americans, happy Aussies but in the end they all walked on. Ha - joy o joy there is Jeff waiting for me. Standing in the rain head bowed leaning on his poles water dripping off his hood. It's quite wet but not too cold. Walking on small sealed road through pretty green grassy fields - odd smell of piggery. Not much traffic but have to leap off road when a manure truck splashes past.
Plod plod 12 ks today which is quite big for me but doing fine, using my poles, tic tac. Aha a supermarket restaurant development out of the blue - only seen quaint little shops - perhaps they hide commerce out in the country. Never mind in I rush - yeh Cafe Descafeinado and a huge selection of bocadillos- type of crunchy roll with ham cheese fillings - all gluten - omg I am hungry - aha order tomato soup with potato balls floating in it and it arrives with yet another bowl of bread which I give away.
Out into the rain we plod - keep the breathing relaxed Sal, keep the shoulders relaxed Sal - then I look upwards and there scattered on the green hills are big whitewashed houses with shutters - Valcarlos - I have arrived, I have done Day 1.

PamG So you get to sleep in villas?
Caroline I love your stream of thought! Good on ya Sal! Are you gluten free now or just for the walk? I can't wait to hear more. You're wonderful! BVH!
Jane Impressed with your low pack weights, well done :-) And love your writing style... good luck. (I'm hobbling slowly with a walking pole each day too, but always get there in the end:-))
sallygrimmett Caroline Lovely to hear from you Caroline. Gluten free for 2 yrs now so a bit of struggle now here in Spain, everything with bread. But where there's a will there is a way. BVHs
sallygrimmett Pam spose we could go up market but we are staying in the Municipal Albergues $10/night mixed dorm and mixed shower rooms. You usually get a curtain to shower behind - some really good, tonight's a bit ordinary - will put polyprops on to hop into bed tonight :)
