We are getting close to Cairns and the road became very hilly. The last 100 km took over 2 hours to drive because of all the road construction. We went up and over several of these hills, some were really steep.

We also saw many km of banana plants. Banana plants are perennials that have to be trimmed back every year. There is only one stalk of bananas per plant. They place these bags over them just before harvest to slow down the ripening, protect the skin from bruising and keep insects away. Pretty amazing.

This is Mission Beach. It started to rain just as we got there, so it was pretty deserted. Pretty though.

On our way to have a look at Mission Beach on route to Cairns we came across dozens of these signs. This bird is an endangered species in Australia and it is a crime to kill one, even accidentally.

We stopped at a roadside stand to buy some fresh pineapples, papaya, and bananas.
