Lake Takepo is a small town set on a glacial lake. We were the only ones from the bus to get off here so at least it is quiet. We had a quick wonder into the very small town and then went and did some snow tubing which was a lot of fun. Basically throwing yourself down a snow run in a rubber ring in the most imaginative way that you can.
After that we went to the hot springs to chill out for a bit. At the same place they and an ice hockey tournament on so we watched a few games which were really good. They had beer and BBQ but because the alcohol laws here are so strict no ID meant no beer for us. The next day we took a walk to the top of Mount John. Takepo is one of the best places in the world to look up at the night sky, it is normally very clear and all of the lights in the town have been angled down so they don't interrupt the four giant telescopes at the top of mount John. We tramped up and had a drink but didn't do the very expensive stargazing tour as it was pretty cloudy and no matter how confident you are about where the stars are you cannot see them through cloud. We came down and watched the sunset on the mirror glacial lake which was stunning. Next stop Christchruch!
