I have always held a penchant for South Africa; one that was strongly influenced by the heroism of Nelson Mandela and the musical score of the Lion King. Perhaps I was a little naïve in my thinking, but before touching down I had envisaged a land where freedom fighters stood tall, campaigning to bridge the enduring racial gap; where giraffes roamed free against the backdrop of a forever-setting sun; where gospel choirs filled the air with their rich and harmonious vocals.
Since arriving five weeks ago, I have managed to experience all of these things, though not on so grand a scale. While there are indeed giraffes in South Africa, they are confined to Game Reserves and do not base their movements on those of the constantly shifting sun. Though choirs subsist in abundance, I have only had the pleasure of attending one concert where, incidentally, no one had even heard of the Circle of Life. As for the freedom fighters, they seem to be few and far between but, given my role, I've been incredibly lucky to be exposed to 13 of the country's best.
The recent Leadership Forum brought together a collection of GoLD's brightest and most influential Peer Educators, for a week of discussions and ideas. Through topics such as HIV/AIDS, Gender Roles and Drug and Alcohol Abuse, the 13 learners shared their experience and understanding, and devised ways in which to tackle these issues at a community level. I could not help but be blown away by their enthusiasm and the deep love they all feel for South Africa. Regardless of the hardships they face, these learners have such a strong connection to their culture and to the land upon which it was founded. Their sense of pride is outstanding, as is their determination to create a better future for themselves and those that surround them. They are the freedom fighters of their generation and they will achieve unparalleled things.
And so, while my previous conceptions were a little off the mark, South Africa has certainly managed to astound me. Bit by bit, it is getting under my skin in such a way that it is staining me, and I like the colour it's leaving.
