If you notice I had two blog entries In Budapest on the same day. They are different blogs just one early in the am the other late late at night. Well, we waited for the bus for a long time last night. The bus that was supposed to come didn't and we had to wait an extra hour. We caught the train to Ljubljana from bled and the trip took about one and a half hours. We walked to our hostel: http://www.souhostel.com/It is this really old jail that they converted the cells into rooms and there are two doors on each room. There is a jail cell door and a wooden door. This hostel is in the art district and so each room was designed by a different artist. Our room is kind of boring except for a cool wooden step/shelving unit. The hostel is very big and not homey like the other ones we have stayed in so I don't like it that much even though it is interesting, with art and interesting painted walls throughout. The food we had for dinner in the restaurant last night was very good which earns it points.
This morning we walked down to the town center. At first I was not super impressed with the town but as you leave the center and walk along the canal/waterways it becomes very pretty. There are weeping willow trees hanging into the water and cafes, shops and restaurants run along the canal. There are chestnut trees and a lot of benches to sit and relax on. There is ivy of every color covering all the old buildings and all the small little bridges that cross the waterways. There are iron balconies with window boxes which contain over flowing amounts of geraniums in reds and pinks.
There is a lot of bikes being ridden about. Even little old people seem to negotiate the cobblestones, dogs, and pedestrians well. Even the stop lights have a little bike light to tell the bikers when to stop and go, it is quite cute. On a health note: I swear I am going to need a cigarette when I get back to the USA so I don't go through withdrawals. I have probly smoked like 2 packs just drinking a single cup of tea. EVERYBODY smokes and I wish I was not so sickened by the smell because it is everywhere. I realize living in CA is like living in a small bubble.
I realize that after a while European cities start looking similar. I feel like we are moving so much and trying to get so many things in that we have very little down time. After a while I feel like yep another castle, oh gee more cobble stones. I need enough sleep to adequately appreciate the beauty around me. One really fun thing we saw in the city was there was this very large farm market and if you walk around different parts of town there will be huge backyards completely full of gardens for the specific purpose of selling produce at this market that is open daily.
I thought it would be really challenging being a vegetarian abroad. So far it has been really just fine. There are sometimes limited options but all in all I have eaten extremely well.
We are just making last minute arrangements for our train trip to Croatia. Talk to you in the next country.
