Helloooo
Sorry it has been so long, we have done alot of travelling over the past week so have been a bit rubbish on the blog front. Ok, so after leaving Ko Samui we headed for Ko Tao. The island was very small and alot less western than Ko Samui, the beaches were fantastic, long with white sandy beaches. There were lots of bars on the beach which had a good atmosphere, just how you would imagine a thai beach party to be, drinking rediculous cocktails from sand castle buckets... great for a hang over.
We managed to do some snorkling in shark infested waters, we went on a boat trip with the tour group around the island, stopping at many places for fish spotting. There were so many different coloured fish, all different sizes (most people got to see sharks, we didnt...trust).
During the second day we hired quad bikes and went around the island, the roads were non existant, instead there were dirt tracks with huge rocks in the middle of them and extremely steep... it was more than off roading! Great fun though, we could stop where ever we wanted, stopping for food at random places and going to hidden beaches. The weather was really hot on Ko Tao, as per usual.
So on the third day our group left and headed back to Bangkok, we stayed as we were getting the night boat to another part of thailand. During the day we just hung around the beach playing frisby etc.
Before we got on the boat we wanted to grab a shower so we asked our hotel if we could borrow a room, as we had already checked out. They took us to the most disgusting shower we had ever used (basicaly a outside shed with a hose in it). The night boat was an experience, the boat was really old and wooden, we had to climb a ladder to the upstairs area which had 50 matresses side by side, our bedroom for the night, we were literally elbow to elbow with strangers (mostly locals). We sailed at 9.00 and lights out were at 9.30 (pitch black) so the only option was to sleep (no on board entertainment, where is the champagne bar we wondered).
From the mainland we got a bus to Phukett, on the west side of thailand. This area suffered the most damage from the tsunami. It is very much built for tourists, especially german tourists, there were german bars everywhere (even an austrian restaurant!). We found some accomadation, nice but cheap, and went for a couple of beers.
We booked to go on a boat tour around Phi Phi (the island that they filmed the beach on), that was realy good. We snorkeld in some good spots and chilled out on 'The Beach', which looks pretty much exactly as it does on the film, except for the 1000 tourists. The tour involved going to a random island that had very little on it, that was really good... but to many tourists.
After a fun filled month in Thailand it was eventualy time to say goodbye, we had a flight from Phukett on monday (27th aug) and headed for Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
I love Kuala Lumpur, we have been here for three nights (only planning on staying for two, and we have booked to stay for a further two more nights!). We have randomly come at the best time because tomorrow (31st) is the 50th anniversary of being independent from the UK. Tonight there is a big open air concert with fireworks at 12 and tomorrow there is a big parade (the best part is that its all free).
On Tuesday we went up the Petronas towers (the biggest twin towers in the world, with a bridge linking them) that was great to see the city from above. We also went up the KL tower and zip wired around the bottom, that was good fun. As its a Muslim country it is difficult to get beer (so drinking has been at a minimum here, good for the liver). The shopping centres are massive, with every shop you could think of, if only we had more money....
Yesterday we went to the Hilton and pretended that we were staying there so we could use the facilities...big pool, water slide, jaquzzi, steam room and sauna. Cheeky i know but we thought we had might as well give it a go. We spent most of the day there and went around the city on the monorail to see a bit more of the city.
We have been to the cinema a couple of times in the Petronas towers, cheap and much appreciated (hadnt seen a movie in ages!).
The food here is good, mostly indian based, a good break from thai green / red curry. Tomorrow night we are going to go to Chillis, about time we treated our selves to western food (well mexican). On Sat we are heading for Singapore, about a 5 hour bus ride.
Hope all is well back at home,
Love Bryn and Ryan
