Gday Bruce' and Sheilas, put another shrimp on the barbie, grab a tinnie play the digeriedoo and throw a boomerang.....as you can propably guess by our fluent Australian, we ve arrived in Cairns Australia....strooth!! But more to be told later after we update you on our final few days in Asia...sob sob :-(
So last time we all spoke, we were in KL enjoying the sights sounds and cinemas of a real city again. So after deciding to stay in KL for a few days longer because of what we were told was going to be BIG celebrations for Merdeka, we were ready to celebrate in style with the locals....One problem, I dont think Malysians know what the word party means. We headed to the 'square to be' for Merdeka eve where it all happened 50 years ago thinking it may resemble some kind of new years eve style party. Starting off as wel always seem to, we grabbed some food which to no surprise was really good and cheap. We then wondered through the, now hectic streets, around the square and finally squeezed ourselves into a good spot amongst around 200,000 people all of which were local. Considering it was a celebration celbrating the end of Brits in Malaysia we felt slightly akward and people seemed to look at us a bit strangely. The night continued with a load of malaysian songs and then the BIG countdown to Merdeka after which we expected fire works and, bangers, sparklers and anything else happy and fun....instead we were given an old man that looked a bit like the a asian pope doing a Hitler type propaganda speech. We figured that was our cue to leave so spent the next 2 hours trying to get out of the crowds. So all in all a bit disappointing BUT (theres always a but) the experience was worth it in the end..as i doubt we'll ever experience anything like that again and will prob never be such a minority in a crowd.
The next day we gave the Merdeka parade a miss after the night before and wondered around KL again through China town and surprise surprise seemed to be drawn to the Petronas towers again. That night we decided to treat ourselves to some good food so had dinner in Chilis in the Petrona towers....dont thing we ve felt so stuffed in the whole tour after some serious fanjitas.
The following day it was bye bye to KL and hello to Singapore. AFter a 5 hour bus ride (most comfy bus ever) and a hellof along time at passport control we arrived in Singapore which again was completely different to KL....modern, clean, and shopping centre after shopping centre it was a bit like Hong Kong was and def had that big city vibe again...even though its a whole country. After wondering down the main shopping street, Orchard road, we decided we needed lots of money to buy all the clothes we trying on so blew all our budget and are having to fly home next week...joking of course, we stayed striong and bought nothing, unfortunately. In the evening we headed to Hard Rock Cafe for some grub with a girl we met in the Hostel and watched the band who were singing some classics!
The nect day we walked through little India, which did actually feel like we d stepped into Delhi, and then headed to the Quays in the centre. The eveining we headed back to the quays to celbrate our last night in Asia, where else but Hooters of course. It was more like Tweaters in Singapore with the local girls, but they did try...im sure aklot of padding and tissues. We got all expensive after hooters and decided a must for singapore was to have a Singapore sling in the bar where they were invented at Raffles hotel. A really random place where the thing to do was to eat monkey nuts and chuck the shells on the floor.
Singapore was fantastic and def a place to come back to, but the following day it was bye bye to Asia and after an 8 hour flight, we arrived in Cairns...to find that Ryans baggage had nt travelled with us!! So being bagless for a couple of days meant Bryn had to put up with me ponging a bit in the same T-shirt, which im still wearing now (bag arrives today). Anyway, Cairns is prettu cool...very laid back Australian with a man made lagoon and bars to chill out in along the front. Last night we headed to a typical backpackers bar for a huge steak and a party afterwards. Randomly they had a thing called the gold fish olympics where you raced fish down a pipe by blowing bubbles up there ass..Bryn bid for George W Fish and raced him into the semi final but got knocked out against Bjork the swedish fish....very random sport! The fish race was just the warm up to the wet T-shirt competition which was won by an English girl who I think mixed up wet t-shirt and strptease. Not that we're complaining.
Next its down to Mission Beach where we re going to do a skydive....ahhhhhhhh!!! So we'll leave it at that and update you on whetehr the parachurte worked or not in the next blog!
Hope all is good at home...speak soon Ryan and Bryn
