Hello everyone, I've been quite busy over the last few weeks so I thought it was time for another blog.
So after abruptly losing my job at Computershare I made the decision to head to Alice Springs to do a tour of the outback. I managed to get a flight fairly cheaply through Tiger Airways and off I went. The flight there was probably the most interesting flight I've ever been on. As I looked out the window all I could see was orange, there was nothing for miles and miles. As the flight descended I was able to see how I really was heading to the middle of nowhere.
Alice Springs is a strange town which I was expecting really. There is river that runs through it which is nearly always dry, except the day I arrived it began to flow. This is something very rare so I was happy in some ways that I was able to see it. Every year they have a boat race in Alice where people carry boat down the river. It is the only boat race in the world to be canceled because there was water in the river. There are a lot of aboriginal people in Alice and going there was the first time I had seen any. Unfortunately, many of the aborignees were drunk or being taken away by police, it was very sad to see.
I was only in Alice Springs for a day and then I headed out on a 6 day tour to Adelaide. This included visits to Uluru, Kata Tjata, Coober Pedy, Flinders ranges, Quorn and the Wilpena Pound. Unfortunately the trip to Kings Canyon was cancelled because the road leading to it were being flooded. The trip was good and Uluru was an amazing sight. At Coober Pedy many people build there houses underground and we stayed at an underground hostel there. During the trip I saw wild kangeroos, Emus, Camels, Lizards and a Thorny Devil. I did't see any snakes though which I was a bit disappointed about but luckily I didn't see any dangerous spiders either.
I spent one day in Adeliade which was probably enough. It's quite a nice town but there isn't much to see there really. From Adelaide I got a Greyhound back to Melbourne where I met up with a couple of friends from Fiji and we spent a few days doing some touristy stuff in melbourne which was really good.
Changes to my flights mean I'll now be flying out of Sydney to Singapore on the 24th December so I decided to get a flight up to Cairns and travel down the East coast. However, before I did that I took a day tour to the great ocean road which is an amazing road west of Melbourne. One of the best parts of the trip for me was seeing a Koala Bear up close and an Echidna.
So now I am in Cairns having flown here two days ago. There is a tropical climate here and it's very hot but I don't mind it as it makes a change from Melbourne's generally cool weather. I have booked my next week of travel during which I will be going to Whitsundays and Fraser Island. Yesterday I went on a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I had only intended to go snorkelling, which was great, and i saw some some amazing fish as well as a turtle, but when I got on the boat I decided to do some scuba diving as well. The scuba diving was really good and I'd really like to do some more at some point. It is a very strange experience to begin with. The hardest part I found was to breathe normally as you become very aware of your own breathing.
Anyway, tonight I get an overnight bus to Airlie Beach where I will be doing some Whitsundays sailing which i am looking forward to. I hope everyone is well back in cold England and thank you for your messages.
Bye for now.
Ryan
