Ryan and Whitney's Travels
Hello everyone,
This is our first entry and 10 days have already gone by, so this will be sort of long.
Day 1
We flew into Mexico city, which seems like a city that never ends flying over it. Angel, the owner of the Bed and Breakfast we stayed at, picked us up from the airport and drove like a bat-out-of-hell through the narrow, crowded streets to the hostel. We stayed right off of Insurgentes Ave, which is the longest Avenue in Central America. We eat our first tacos a street vendor and then had our first beer at the little restaurant under our hostel called La Casa de Cuchi. Next we went up to the roof of the hostel, where we met Angela and Anna, the swedish girls, and James and Prashanti, the british couple. Steve, from NY, and Angel come up with a bottle of El Jimador. A few shots and everyone feel like we have know each other for years. After meeting a few more people in the hostel we decide its been a long day and it was off to bed.
Day 2
Whit and I wake up and go to the roof top breakfast and decide to go to Teotihuacan with Angela and Anna. We took the Metro(subway) for the first time, which is absolutely the most wonderful system, 2 pesos to go anywhere in the city. Once at the bus station we take a bus to the pyramids. Walking along the Avenue of the Dead, the main walkway of the pyramids, and climbing the pyramids was breathtaking literally and metaphorically.
Later that night Angels friend Gerardo asked all of us to go to a bar with him since it was the last night that they could sell alcohol for the weekend because of the elections. This was whitneys first time at a bar so that was exciting, and just so you parents out there do not get scared we only had two drinks. Last call was at 11pm so we all headed back to the hostel and went to bed.
Day 3
As odd as it sounds Angela, Anna, Whit, Steve, Matt(the austrailian sufer), and I went to Six Flags Mexico City. It was a lot of fun except when whit and I got split up from the rest of the group right at the end of the day, but we made our way home and it actually is a really good story of how we met back up with them. That night, even though there was suppose to be no sale of alcohol, La Casa de Cuchi held a private party with there doors down so it was a good time.
Day 4-Election Day
We woke up and went to breakfast, and Angela and Anna told us that they were going to go to Puerto Escondido with Whit, Matt, and I so we were all pretty excited. Whit and I went to the Zocalo, which is basically the huge town square. It was absolutely packed with election rallies. We went to the largest and oldest Cathedral in Latin America and it was sunday mass so it was interesting to see. The night was uneventful, but I sat up for a couple hours talking to Angel about the election.
Day 5
I woke up early to see James and Prashanti off. They were headed in a similar direction as we are later in the trip so hopefully we can meet up with them again. We basically spent all day packing and figuring out when the bus left, which was 5.45 at night. Matt was quite a sight walking through mexico city at 2200m of elevation and riding on the metro carrying a surfboard. The bus ride was fine, but hard to sleep because they had the A/C on full blast.
Day 6
Woke up about 5AM as we pulled into Pochutla. Couldnt really sleep for the rest of the ride, which ended up being a 17 hour journey. Once in Puerto Escondido, we headed for the beach and spent the day swimming and laying out in the sun. Met some more good people. Whitney went to bed early while the rest of us went to some bar which was having a huge party. the party was fun, talked to a british guy who is starting to do some work with sustainable development in mexico, was called a p**** american by some british girl cause i didnt feel like chugging my cuba libre, and I also met Sal Masekela from ESPN. I had fun.
Day 7
Woke up early and we all went to the beach and hung out there all day. Ate some pizza for dinner. Went to a bar called Wipeout for a little bit and went to bed. Simply a very relaxing day.
Well that is all for now, I have more, but someone wants to get on the computer so im going to be nice and let him. Well we love you all and I hope you are all having fun at home while we are having the times of our lives here. ¡Hasta Luego!
