Dear All,
Well you'll all be glad to know that we are alive and thankfully not caught in the earthquake or the tsunami. We felt the tremor here in Cusco the night before we left for our trek. It was surreal and can only be compared to the feeling you get when you've had way to much to drink and you think the ground and the walls are swaying. Only this time they actually were! As we left the next morning at 4am for 5 days we didn't realise how bad it had been until we got back to civilisation. Now we are back in Cusco and the reality of the situation hits and it is really chilling. We went to the donation place today as they are desperate for water and clothes. We were only in Ica a week previous so we're feeling grateful that our plans were as they were.
On a lighter note, our Salkantay Trek to Machu Pichu was awesome. 5 days on peace and relaxation combined with hard core hiking. Some very early starts (5am!) to avoid walking in the sun, and the most spectacular scenery. Sadly I don't have enough time to write more than that right now as it has taken an hour and a half to reply to people worrying about us! We'll fill you in on Machu Pichu and the Trek to Salkantay Mountain in a few days.
Thank you all so much for your worried emails and messages! It's nice to feel loved!
Take care for now,
Love Ruth and Greg
