18th,19th.20th September- Cape Tribulation
Got on the bus and started chatting to Amy who was a really cool Irish girl anyway slept for most of the journey until we arrived at various points and had to do the polite "oh, right".
We called at Mossman Gorge but unfortunately our guide seemed to be working to a very very tight schedule. So we had 4 minutes here and 30 minutes here. Went for a walk in the Daintree Rainforest which was incredibly beautiful it still amazes me that within one country you can have desert and rainforest. Called at the Mangrove Animal Sanctuary for lunch and was told about Cassawary's, saw a roo but couldn't hold it because we had to go go go go. It was alright but our guuide was insistant we stayed together and if anyone went to take a photo of something else he said " I said we must stay together". It was like we were on an African Safari and the animals were roaming around the park. At one point I nearly said we are not children and then had a horrible feeling that the way he was acting is how I am. It was a good lesson on what it must be like for people who have teachers as friends, partners, etc.
We arrived at PK's our backpackers and arrived in our dorms which were pretty basic but for two nights it was fine. I was sharing with Amy and some Irish girls. While our b****ing about the guide had been going on I found out Amy is a teacher in Ireland. She gets 9 weeks off in the Summer so has spent the last 5 years seeing the world and working in Orphanages. She seems to have been everywhere and had already done Cairns but missed Cape Trib out last time. We arrived and met Kate a girl Amy had met diving the day before. So we all went to the beach and guess what Kate is a teacher so we spent most of the day retelling stories of school. Kate works in inner city London and MA seems like a dream job compared to what she puts up with. Amy's job sounds tough in some ways but all I kept thinking was 9 weeks holiday I could see SE Asia or at least Thailand and Cambodia in that time. Anyway that night got drunk had fun.
19th September 2007- Fruit tasting- Sea Kyaking.
Got up and walked to Cape trib beach because we had been conned and we were staying near Myall beach. It was a short walk so we spent the morning reading OK and Who. Then at 2:00 I went on my fruit tasting session. 2 ex teachers realised that teaching in NT was similar to teaching in Melbourne so left and bought a plot of land in Cape Trib. They lived fairly simple lives but managed to make an OK living growing fruit in their Orchard selling it and doing tours for people like me. Actually was a really interesting session and got to taste fruits that tasted of custard and one that was the texture of chocolate mousse. This finished at 3:45 rushed back and went of to do sea Kyaking bumped into Nick from rafting and went Kyaking around Cape Trib beach. Now I haven't Kyakked since I was 13 at Sale Water Park and quite frankly was rubbish. The instructor Stuart looked after me for most of the time which was quite embarassing because I know the rest of the group thought I was seeking his attention but in fact I was horrified that he was by my side coz I was so awful. Stuart wasn't bad looking but not my type and kept telling me stories about trees and as soon as I began to listen I stopped paddling. I tried to explain that listening and Kyaking involves co-ordination, something I again lack. Did enjoy the Kyaking and the views were amazing but my arms were aching by the end. Got back and bumped into Sarah who I had met on my first day in Perth. I said I would contact her once I got to Cairns but had forgotton and thought she would be fine as she is soooooo outgoing. Spent the evening with Emma,Dave, Amy, Nick , Sarah and Helen. Unfortunately the bar did not have much atmosphere so I went to a bed early.
Thursday 20th September 2007.
Spent the morning on the beach and got picked up at 2:00. On the way back called at the Diantree icecream factory where icecream is produced using the exotic fruits. Then went on the crocodile cruise down the Daintree River. Did not see one croc which was fine as I had been on the amazing jumping croc cruise in Kakadu. However would have been slightly pisssed off if I was another passenger. The cruise was really nice and relaxing. We got back on the bus to travel to Port Douglas . Port Douglas is beautiful and I would have thought expensive a beautiful golf course where apparantly you get to see Crocs because they live in the water pond things. Not what I would want to see if I was on a golf course, not that me being on a golf course is too likely hey babe.
Arrived back in Cairns went for tea with Amy and Kathy in the Woolshed and then got ready for the Grey hound. 12 hour journey to Airley beach. I was sad to leave Cairns but know I would have got stuck there getting drunk.
