Less than a week to go now and I've been looking at the itinerary for the 10 days.....
Day 1: Overnight flight from Heathrow to Nairobi. A 9 hr flight, and looking at day 2, they are expecting us to sleep on the plane!!
Day 2: Transfer by coach from Nairobi to Nyeri. Which will take about 3-4 hrs until we get to our first hotel (Green Hills Hotel). We get fitted for our bikes and then a warm up ride of about 2km to Baden Powell's Grave. The an evening of finding out more about the challenge....a little late I'd suggest!!
Day 3: 99km cycling from Nyeri to Nyahururu, past sugar cane, tea and coffee fields. We reach the equator and our hotel for the night, the Thomson's Falls Lodge.
Day 4: 57km cycling onto Subukia town. Passing vast tea plantations and stop at the view point over the rift valley at 2550m asl. After lunch it's a transfer 120km to Baringo, where we spend the night at the Soi Safari Lodge.
Day 5: This day starts with another transfer, going from Baringo to Kabernet, which should take about an hour. Then it's the toughest day of the ride, with 85km cycling of serious climbing on windy roads. We climb the Elgeya escarpment, and then AFTER LUNCH, it's a bit flatter!!! 23km of hill before lunch!
Day 6: 92km cycling on tarmac and dust roads, through plantations and farms until we reach our hotel for the night, the Golf Hotel in Kakamega.
Day 7: The last day of cycling and at last it's mainly down hill with some steep climbs. 53km of cycling and our final destination of Lake Victoria. We arrive at the Sunset Hotel in Kisumu, for a celebratory meal!
Day 8: A 4 hr transfer from Kisumu back to Nakuru, and then it's an afternoon relaxing by the pool at the Waterbuck Hotel, or a game drive.
Day 9: 3-4 hr early morning transfer back to Nairobi. Then it's a trip to the elephant orphanage, before a visit to the Faraja Project. This is the Kenya Cancer Charity that we're also supporting. They are hosting lunch for us and we get to see the work they do and why we just cycled 400km. Then it's back to the Old Sereni hotel and an evening meal followed by last night drinks.
Day 10: We leave Nairobi on the 12:40 flight back to the UK, arriving at 19:05, 9 and half hour flight.
