We seem to be getting used to the longer train journeys now, so a 4 hour stint to Pisa was a walk in the park!
We arrived early afternoon and immediately noticed the difference - Pisa was quiet!! After a quick pit stop, we went in search of our apartment. Our new host was lovely - our favourite so far! She and her partner spent quite a bit of time chatting with us and telling us about the local places to visit and eat - she even drew us a handy little map! There wasn't much to do in Pisa by all accounts, other than to visit the famous tower and we were advised to go later in the evening to avoid the crowds. After a quick coffee with our new host we headed out for a relaxed afternoon/evening of food and drink with a little bit of sightseeing mixed in.
The tower was about a 10 minute walk from where we were staying - nice and handy! James was not too thrilled with my suggestions for amusing pictures at the tower, nevertheless, I succeeded in getting a couple of 'funny' ones! It's an odd thing really, from the pictures, we expected it to be bigger than it was and it's really in the middle of everything. Probably due to the colour of it, it almost looks like it's been painted onto its background. The basilica next to it was, again, stunning and we spent a little while wandering around the grounds.
Tummy's rumbling, we went in search of dinner. Consulting the map, we went to a couple of places that provided free food with your drinks - perfect when you're on a budget! We spread our starter over 2 bars (they did everything from pizza bread to pasta with pesto and potatoes - mmmm! Although I think even the amount of walking we've been doing doesn't warrant so much carbs in one sitting!). Ready for our main, we stopped at a recommended restaurant and thought we'd treat ourselves to a steak and a bottle of red. I think it's the only place I've ever been where they put the red wine in a chiller bag! It was so hot outside that it kept the wine at the perfect temperature! And the steak…wow, we wish we had got a picture of it. We didn't get 2 individual steaks…the brought us out a huge chunk of steak on the bone, cooked to perfection…yummy!! For pudding, we went to an ice cream shop that apparently did the 'best ice cream in Tuscany' (bold statement I know)...but it was pretty damn good! Ice creams in hand and a little bit merry, we headed back up to the tower to see it at night all lit up - beautiful!
We only had one night in Pisa before coming up to Florence, so we had a chilled morning (after being woken up at 5am by an alarm going off outside - Pisa might be pretty quiet by day, but it didn't seem as quiet this morning!). Nursing some pretty epic mosquito bites (how are we going to cope in Asia?!), we opted for a lazy breakfast, after a quick chat with our host (with promises to come back and visit and have dinner with the rest of the family!) then we were off to get the train. Short but sweet - definitely on the list of places to come back and visit.
