Well, just thought i'd finish off my blogs.
So, what can I say about Kakadu, other than it was amazing! After everyone got picked up from Darwin we were on our way to Adelaide River for the crocodile cruise, after stopping off at the Humpty Doo Servo for a coffee, which is world famous apparently although no one could tell me why!! We also stopped off at the Adelaide Inn, which is where the buffalo from Crocodile Dundee is stuffed and stood on the bar!! We eventually arrived at adelaide river and made our way to what seemed like quite a small boat, seeing as we would be on a river full of crocodiles! Genda, our tour guide, who was an aboriginal and amazing, was putting chicken necks on the end of a pole and enticing the crocodiles! It was amazing to see them stretch up for their food. He was also whistling and throwing scraps into the air, which the birds were swooping down to catch and copying his whistles, as they were whistling kites!! He then lured a beast of a croc towards us and man was he ugly! and Huge. Genda got the beast to beach on the mud so we could really get an idea of his size and oh my goodness he was massive and there was still over a metre we couldn't see under the water! We also saw a teeny baby croc who was pretty cute! Genda told us that females lay about 60eggs at a time but only 20-30% survive, and mum looks after them for 2-3weeks then leaves the nest and they have to fend for themselves, and if they're still in the nest when she returns she would probably eat them as she wouldn't recognise them as her own! Nice! After the croc cruise we went to some Wetlands where we saw hundreds of birds and learned about magpie geese, a bird that aboriginals catch and eat! And we saw a Jaburu, known to us as elbow legs! After the wetlands we headed into Kakadu! First stop was a waterfall with pools top and bottom which we could swim in. After chilling out for half an hour or so we headed on our way, stopped to collect a load of firewood then onto our camp, which was right next to Gunlom Falls, and pithced up the tents, well i say tents but really i mean nets! Afterwards we headed to see the waterfall, which was beautiful, and huge, and we would be climbing up it the next night in order to swim in the pools at the top and watch the sunset, I couldn't wait. Now was teatime and Genda had cooked up a storm on the fire, Kangaroo Burritoes, which were gorgeous, soooo tasty, he was an amazing cook!
The next day we had a short walk to another waterfall, which again was beautiful. There was a massive rock in the middle, where everyone sat, then a huge pool and the waterfall. Eloise and I were the first ones in and swam over to the waterfall, sat under it and got pummelled by it, it was fabulous and so refreshing! After having mid morning snack we made our way to another waterfall for another dip before lunch! We then headed back to camp and made our way up the cliff to the top of Gunlom Falls, and it was steep but it was all worth it when we got to the top, the views were breathtaking, out over Kakadu, it was stunning. We then climbed further to get to the pools at the top of the waterfall and the views were even better there. Eloise and I lay at the edge of the infinty pool just mesmerised by the stunning view in front of us, I could have stayed there forever, it was so beautiful! We then dried off and made our way to the viewing point and watched the sunset and it was amazing and so peaceful. After clambering down the cliff tea was ready and Genda had really outdone himself, roast chicken and all the trimmings-YUM MY!! The nexxt day we went to some termite mounds and learnt about them, the mounds are pretty much 70years of termite poo! But they're pretty cool bugs, very territorial, I like 'em! After this we headed to the Aborginal Centre which told the story of the aboriginals, it was so interesting and inciteful. Then we headed to view the original rock art which was amazing. We saw what would have been a maternity ward! And lots more rock art, paintings of the lightning man and Nabulwinjbulwinj, who was not a very nice brother but he served as a warning to girls about the poison in certain Yams! And his sister's face was in the Nourlangie Rock, it was amazing! I absolutely loved Kakadu and will definitely be going back there at somepoint!
