When you read this, just know they have been said by VSO volunteers and these are the 9 signs that we have embraced Filipino culture. One of the Voluntary Service Overseas core values....achieved. Boom.
1. "Could you imagine going to the bathroom, brushing your teeth and spitting on the floor afterwards?" (Filipinos do this either in the bathroom, by the shower or outside. No sink used).
2. "We could get like the h12 bus, squeeze maybe 5 or 6 people in three seats. All crammed up. Yes" (Jeepneys are never ever spacious).
3. *making kissing sounds* "you, over there" *making kissing sounds "what time are you leaving today?" (Instead of waving or calling for attention, they kiss...like the type you would do, to get a kiss - speaking of waves, they never do that on Jeepneys. Ever).
4. "Could you imagine banging parts of the bus with a coin just to get off. Or screaming 'Hunong!' on a red double decker bus? At anytime we want, even between bus stops....?" (Two common ways to stop a jeepney and Jeepneys stop anywhere).
5. "Going home, we could lay the table with a fork and spoon. Knives are no longer relevant. The family be like......"
6. "We'll know we've turned Filipino when we ask for a bucket and a plastic saucepan." (How we take our baths here, in cebu).
7. "When we have a meal and we ask to have rice...." (Rice is everything).
8. A friend or family will be like: "So, how was your trip, its been so long, so much has happened, I dont know where to begin..." Me: *constantly raising eyebrows* (Filipinos do this in a sense of showing they are listening).
9. "Right, so this is our English pound, this is a pence. Obviously the 50ps are in a shape of a hexagon. We've been gone for too long.." (Pesos, are all circular or paper).
