During my time in Melbourne i tried to spend each weekend doing something touristic. As people had pointed out Melbourne had a very European appearance compaired with the modern, more clinical motropolis feel of Sydney. There was a great cafe culture in Melbourne with some fabulous restaurants dotted around. The lady i worked next to at HJB was an actress with a greek backround- she was a wee bit over the top but kindly offered to take me down to the Mornington Penninsula to see round some of the vineyards, we had lunch at Portsea and coffee at Sorento. I also: went up the observation deck of the Rialto towers (one of the tallest skyscrappers in the world); went (mostly window) shopping in South Yarra Brunswick and Bridge Steet, did a 'Neighbours' day tour of the Erinsbourgh high school and Ramsey Street (its so iccle!) yes i know its a bit cheesy but i felt i owed it to the 13 year old Ruth who gave so many years dedicated viewing time to that program- it was a good giggle!; I had a fab night out at a burlesque caberet show called Draculas where me and a friend decided to dress up in Charleston girl outfits (i understood every one was to be in fancy dress- um no!) had a great time all the same and ended up dancing the night away after the show and a three course meal!; I visited the Immigration and Melbourne Museams; Did a day trip down the the beautiful and very blustery 'Great Ocean Road'; Took a trip across the harbour on a boat from St.Kilda to Williamston; Wandered around the Victoria Markets up near the distict of Carlton; had a night out in St. Kilda, the city and Fitzroy and went to visit my step grandmother Barbara in her home in the suburb of Burwood, Glen Iris.
The view from our balcony in our appartment in the city meant every night we could see the flames of gas fire balls shoot up into the air from the grand casino. This place was massive (as Bill Bryson noted in the book i was reading, whoever won the carpeting contract for this place would probibly never have to work again!) my flat mates and i took a wonder through the main floor of the casino from one end to the other, on a Satarday night it was amasing to see so many people gambling who looked very much like they had no money to gamble with- sad!
My last day in Melbourne happened to be 'Grand Final Day' For those of you who don't follow AFL (probibly all!) AFL football looks very much like rugby and is big business in Melbourne, i was fustrated that i hadn't managed to get to the MCG stadium to watch a game and there was no chance i would get a ticket to the final game so me and my flatmates ended up following the crowds to the arena set up next to the stadium and sitting on the grass watching the game on a gloriously warm sunny day sipping beer soaking up the atmosphere (brill!)
