We arrived late at night in Harvey Bay (on the main land next to Fraser Island) We had booked a three day package to explore Fraser Island in a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a group of fellow back packers. We were part of a larger group of approximatly 40 people and we were then split up into a smaller group of 10 with our own van that we were responsible for. Having all spent the night at the hostel on the main land we were wisked to have a very brief briefing with the guy who was renting us his precious land rovers. He explained about the different terain we would encounter on this Island which was basically a massive sand bank with a beautiful but dangerous beach with sharks in the water and Dingos in the sand dunes!!
It also turned out that the wooded campsite where we were staying was full of dangerous spiders and snakes but we sort of forgot about this and ended up having an amazing time driving it around the Island exploring. We had no roads, just bumpy dirt tracks inland that lead us to jungle walks, 30 foot sand dunes, stunningly inland lakes and the cliff walk at the north tip of the Island where we could look down on the shark & dolphins swimming below by the rocks below . The 'Highway' was the beach you can see in the piccy which ran up the whole east coast of the island and was only accesable depending on the tide.
Kate and i had three fantastic days on this island with our group which included a fun Irish Couple and brother, a very witty German guy, a slightly strange Canadian boy, and some English girls who it transpired were staff of the hostel we had been staying at and had selected our group specifically from good impressions they had got from fellow staff members the prievious night. We clicked very well as a group as a result and in the evenings we returned to base camp for barbeques and beers with the other groups.
We had been warned about the dingos on Fraser Island as they were notorious for being aggressive towards individuals wondering alone. There was one dingo that took a wonder through the campsite every night at 11.00 (probably checking out his territory) but the sight of 40 back packers munching on burgers singing songs etc. meant we were more threatening to him so he seemed to keep his distance.
