Terrible night's sleep! Poured with rain all night so a constant pitter patter on the tent and it was absolutely freezing! I was sure there was a dingoe outside my tent but turned out to just be one of the chaps snoring in a neighbouring tent!
Up at 6am today, such an uncomfortable night! Woken up at about 5am by the kookaburras laughing in the trees, but greeted by a cooked breakfast and pancakes!
We set off to Lake Wabby first thing. A 40 minute walk from the eastern beach on the island and ended on a sandblow, felt like we were in the desert! Wabby lies at the bottom of a huge sand dune. More beautiful sunshine and swimming in the lovely cool lake water. Lots of sunbathing on the strange angle of the dune. Back to the trucks for a drive down the beach - the 'official highway' on the Island to our new camp site. We set up our smelly wet tents and then had a quick lunch before moving on again to the Champagne Pools - natural salt water pools separated from the main sea (and sharks) by rocks. Lovely clear water. Spotted a dingoe on the walk down, but just one so not too threatening! A young boy was killed by a pack of dingoes (wild dogs descended from wolves) after straying into the bush a couple of years ago. A pack is capable of killing a fully grown man and if you meet them yoiu musn't run as it triggers an attack and you'll be a gonner! Next onto Indian Head, a tricky walk to the top of the cliffs with spectacular views. We spotted some stingrays and a few 2m sharks swimming below!
Back to camp as the sun went down again for the day. We had a bbq for supper and then toasted marshmellows round the camp fire! After not being bitten at all the whole way down the tropical coast, the mossies discovered me and ravaged my poor ankles! Itching like crazy!
After supper our guide drove a group of us down to the beach to see the milky way, one of the only places you can see it and a perfect clear night! Beautiful night sky, we saw orions belt and the southern cross stars..our guide then left the 8 of us on the beach to return to camp to pick up the rest of the group, we started scanning our torches around the beach and spotted 2 dingoes heading straight towards us! We assembled in 'dingoe safe' position so that none of us had our backs to them (funny how all the men ended up in the middle with the girls braving the outer circle! santiago cowering like a little girl haha) and kept our hands up high, staring them down..they luckily weren't too interested, one came very close and then just pooped on the sand. As soon as Kris returned we all jumped into the truck!
An aboriginal man came up to our camp and played the didgeridoo to us! He played lots of different chants they they play in rituals. Eg the day before the tribe would go kangaroo hunting they play the kangaroo chant to the spirits and then when they go hunting the kangaroo will appear in their path. The tune sounded like the bouncing of the kanga!
Slept so much better, much warmer and so tired from the night before as soon as my head hit the pillow I was out!
