Bangkok, Thailand
Touched down in Bangkok and got through customs very easily. The airport is really new & impressive and we were able to get a bus - the Airport Express - really easily into the area where we were staying.
The only complication... Traffic. I think it's only about 30km from the airport to where we needed to get off and it took us over 2 hours. It was ridiculous. I've never known traffic like this. Even Tokyo wasn't this bad. We aren't sure if it was just a one off, or if this was normal rush hour traffic. Not looking forward to many more bus journeys in Bangkok now!
We found our hostel really easily - we were recommended to stay near Khao San Road - an active hub - and found a cheap hostel on the road next door.
Room was quite small, but it had all we needed
Only thing was it was right on the side of the street. Our window was overlooking the busy road, so I'm sure we'll have some noise later.
We were both starving and decided to walk around our area to look for some food. It was great. The buzz of the streets and smell of all the food stalls was fantastic. Found a little restaurant that had just what we were looking for, so went inside to eat. Wow - I had the most amazing Yellow Thai curry and Si was blown away by his Green curry, if this is what's to come of the food, I think we're going to enjoy Thailand..
Whilst walking around we popped into a few more hostels/guest houses just to compare prices and see if anything would be cheaper than where we are staying.
I was quite exhausted and I think Si was as well, so we decided to have an early night. Or so we thought. The noise from the street wasn't a problem, it was the pub across the road who had a live band on. They had a rooftop stage and our room on the 3rd was level with it. The first few hours was quite pleasant - enjoyed the music - but by 4am and still being able to hear them singing heavy metal songs..
we'd both had enough. It was as if we were trying to take a nap in the mosh pit - So loud. Probably only had about 3 hours sleep the whole night. We will definitely be moving hostels tomorrow.
