G'day people,
We've just been on a trip to the Red Centre. & it was an excellent experience. We flew to Alice Springs & go an early night ready for out Rock Tour. In the morning we were picked up at 6am & started to head to the Kings Canyon. The journey was going to be a long oneso each one of our group (2 guides & 17 other tourists) had to stand up at the front of the bus and introduce outselves. The group was a good mix of nationalitie, people from Ireland, America, Hong Kong, Brazil, Germany, France, Indonesia & Italy. We were the only two English.
We arrived at Kings Canyon & hiked for 3 hours through the sandstone domes of the lost city. Our tour guide explained how the area used to be a inland sea and we saw the fossils to prove this. All of the area was green which is unusual, its green at the moment due to the heavy rainfall at the begining of the year. We also visited the garden of Eden which is in the middle of the canyon. If it was warmer, we may of gone for a swim but it was too cold!
We then left and headed to camp, on the way we had to stop for firewood which meant going into the bush and breaking all the dead branches off. Jay was ambitious & jumped up and grabbed a branch, with a bit of bouncing and all of his weight, the branch soon came down meaning Jay falling onto his back with the branch resting on top of his chest - extremely entertaining for me! Also in the process, Jay got carried away with trying to karate kick the branches & split his only trousers straight down the crouch - good job he was wearing pants that day!
We then arrived at bush camp, we had a good camp oven dinner sitting around the fire. We had a fall beers whilst sitting under a million stars and we soon fell asleep in our swags until i was rudely awakened.....
2 mice fell on my head!I sleepily tried to work out what it was but couldnt see anything in the pitch black so i snuggles back down but i soon heard mice squaking & running all over my swag! I sat back up and probably done the worst thing i could have down, i turned on the flash night and the floor was moving! There was alot of mice & they were everywhere. I was freaking out but Jay was cool as a cucumber & more bothered that i had woke him up. I jumped on the bus and found other group members already on there also trying to excape from the mice. However the mice were also on the bus and running around in everyones luggage and eating their food. It goes without saying, i didnt get much sleep that night.
In the morning we all had to get up at 5am, we all packed away the swags and laughed about the bush camp invaders. One girl had been bitten on her finger, someones glasses were nibbled and unbeknown to Jay, one of the girls saw a mouse climbing in his hair!
We set off for Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) We went on another 3hr walk in the valley of the winds. Rachelle our guide showed us some bush tucker & bush medicines as awell as what was used for making spears ect. Kata Tjuta was beautiful, 36 red domes in the middle of the flat dessert.
We then headed to the Aboriginal cultural Centre where we learnt about dreamtime, Aboriginal culture & traditions.
We then headed to Uluru for a mini walk where we got to see Aboriginal Cave drawings & was told Aboriginal stories about the rock, We spent that evenning eating dinner & watching the sun go down over Uluru - it was spectacular!
We took alot of phots of the beautiful red rock as it changed its colours.
We then headed to the campground and this one was abit more civilised as it had showers & toilets. I was worried about the mice but for some reason, there wasnt any. The group sat around the fire in our swags with a couoke of bers and played some games, all of us managed to get a peaceful nights sleep.
On our third day, we got up at 5am again and got ready to go back to Uluru to watch the sunrise. As soon as we set off it was noticed that we had a flat tyre. I think everyones heart sank. Our guides tried to change the tyre but for some reason it wasnt as straight forward as normal. As we waited, we could hear wild dingos howling. We did eventually make it to Uluru. the sun was just starting to come up as we arrived. It was freezing cold, We then had to start our base walk which took 2 hours. We then had to start heading back to Alice.
In 3 days we walked over 25km's, we learnt alot about Aboriginal culture which i think is a great way to spend our last week in Australia by learning about its true people. We got back to Alice Springs and met up with the rest of the group in the evenning for dinner and a few drinks.
Tomorrow we fly to New Zealand, we're sad to leave Australia as it has been a home away from home for us and we have met some really good friends but New Zealand will be another beautiful country we get to see.
Love to everyone at home
