Tuesday July 1
We changed trains in Irun with little problems as Nat was able to find our way in Spanish to San Sebastian. After arriving we only had a couple of blocks to walk to our accommodation. Well after 20 minutes and still not finding it we realised we probably passed it. Eventually we found it and I got the privilege to carry all four bags up to the second storey. After checking in and changing my shirt, we went and grabbed a bite to eat close by. It was very strange to see people smoking inside the restaurant, but I guess that is what Spain is about; doing what you want to do. After lunch we had a little walk around and then back to our place for a siesta. We weren’t quite sure where to go for dinner so we walked around a bit and came across a place that looked nice and we stopped in for a drink and some tapas before their restaurant opened to see if we would stay or not…we ended up just having a couple of tapas and 4 glasses of Rose and almost choked when the bill came and it was only 8€60…I mean we paid more than that for 1 beer in Paris!!!! After that we went for another drink in an irish pub (not sure why) but the place was very seedy so we left quickly to get some sleep.
Wednesday July 2
Woke up early and went for a walk up the giant hill where there once was a castle and barracks. We then went and had lunch at a Mexican inspired restaurant that was really good and super cheap. In the afternoon we went down to the beach (so nice to have sand back) and just lazed around for a couple of hours. That night we splurged a little and went to a Michelin rated restaurant called Kokotxa. It was incredible. We had the 8 course tasting menu and there wasn’t one thing that we could fault with the food. The wine however was another thing, not that it was bad, but after our first glass our bottle was poured into another tables glasses. When I pointed this out they eventually apologised and then got us a brand new bottle….that’s where the trouble started (as you will see from the pictures) as white wine apparently knocks me on my ass. It ended up that the table that was drinking our wine thought that Nat and I were on our first date and that I was Swedish (wtf??) we ended up taking to them for a bit and then out for some more drinks ( I do not remember dessert, let alone going out with these two from Belgium?? Her name was Judith and his was flinkstem or something that I could not pronounce and kept asking how you say it all night) I am assuming we made it home at some point as the next thing I know I was laying in bed with Nat saying we have to check out in 20 minutes.
Thursday July 3
Hungover.
A little drunk still.
Ask for late checkout by saying that I have diarrhea (thanks Nat, you know you really could have said anything but for some reason chose something that would embarrass me when I went up to pay)
But still drunk so don’t really care.
Walk back to the train station to, s***, rent the car…maybe I’m not drunk….found the highway easily and began the 140km/h drive through the mountains towards Leon.
Found Leon (phew) and checked in to our hotel. Our room was massive and we kept thinking that it couldn’t actually be as cheap as it was. We walked around a bit before deciding to call it a night and go to bed as we knew we had a big few days ahead with the beginning of the Camino de Santiago (Pilgrim trail).
