Another state, another time zone. Left Mountain Time and now on West Coast Pacific time , and 8 hrs behind the UK.
Brekkie on the balcony overlooking the park. Warm and sunny, but storms approaching 20 miles away on the other side of the valley.
With sadness, left the this beautiful place, albeit amidst thunder and lightning. Not before we checked out John Wayne's cottage and the set for ' She wore a yellow ribbon' . Checked out Alan Ladd and big John Wayne's entries in the visitor book.
Headed for the Painted Desert ( so called by the spanish conquistadors in the 16th century due to the varied colours), and the petrified forest ( petrified wood) national park today.
Kept my eyes peeled today as we went through Apache country ( Apache national reservation.). Although with my lack of hair, my scalp would prob be worth feck all. Lots of habitated teepees. Proper injun country.
Road kill is awesome here- cows! Honestly. Arizona has to go one better eh?
Arrived at our motel. Probably the most famous on the road. The Wigwam Motel. 16 concrete wigwams tempting travellers to stay since 1950. Surprisingly spacious inside. Ours has twin beds, bathroom, and '100 % refrigerated air'. Its awesome. Car park is littered with classic cars from the 40's to 60's. love it. It was the inspiration for the cozy cone motel in the Disney film Cars.
Torrential rain and thunder storms this afternoon, but it will pass. I hope. Still 83 degrees tho. A chance to chill out, ready for tomorrows drive to the Canyon.
Dinner tonight in another classic 66 landmark - Joe and Aggies diner. Enchiladas and refried beans. Yum!
Weather forecast just on the box - 112 degrees tomorrow. Lordy! And a 250 acre forest fire in Williams, AZ, where we are staying tomorrow - or not if the fire checks in to the hotel before us!
Grand Canyon tomorrow.
