First the good news. 70 mls on that dodgy knee. No problem. Sorted.
Have now reached A Small Town In Germany.
The region of the westrhineland is impossible to navigate using conventional maps. There are no road signs at junctions and no road numbers either. Not only were we having trouble finding the source of the Rhine but we were having trouble finding the river at all. But we stumbled upon the correct navigation method for this part of Germany: one must use a compass to establish the correct direction and then use the large scale maps in bus shelters to determine the next village. Navigation towards that village is then achieved by following red cycle route signage with the name of that village. These local routes are often very circuitous but scenic. They use a mix of roads, tracks and woodland paths. Using this, fairly zigzag, method we arrived in Bonn by late pm.
Bonn is a pretty and busy city. So much in contrast to last night's ghost town.
After finding a room we went out. In a local Bierkeller we met Richard (a 63 yr old troubleshooter for Sony- Erikson). He was having his ears burned off by George: an extremely load and boring German guy who was wanting to practice his English on someone. Hence, we rescued Richard from George and the three of us moved on, (when George was in the loo) and had a nice evening chatting away at an al fresco Italian.
In the Bierkeller, I was talking about my mum's recent charity swim, when her exact double walked in. Spooky. I've included a photo of her on. 'Photos's.
It had been quite a hard cycle. Today, like the two previous days , had been into a stiff easterly headwind. We always seem to get headwinds. ( I hope my friend Peter, who camme thro Bristol yesterday, on his Lands End: John o Groats charity ride, is having better wind ).
We had various chats along the way. This was our shortest:
Her. 'There's a Lidl's"
Me. 'It's Germany"
Having now found the main flow of the (elusive) Rhine, we prepare to follow it upstream. South.
The dark beer was good. Have tasted too our first Riesling.
No rain yet. It could rain after Bonn.
