Hello again!
In Nelson at the mo- very nice little town and a lovely hostel (we have our own room -again!)... This is really just a stop off on the way to Wellington and the rest of the north island tomorrow, though a very nice and relaxing stop where I had one of the best Thai meals ever- Ross had to sit with his trousers undone and then we still managed to eat a deep fried banana pudding- good effort...though I think the waitress thought Ross was trying to display himself to her when she took our pudding order.
What have I done the past few days?...After leaving punakaiki we headed up for a few days in Takaka in the Golden Bay region, which was most relaxing. Didn't do much the first day we were there 'cos there was a massive storm, so just spent the day cafe hopping and reading. Next day we were ridiculously lucky again with the weather because it was glorious sunshine for our kayaking trip and walk around Abel Tasman National Park. Such a nice day (though it felt very strange to be in a kayak and not with Mair!). We had a brilliant guide who gave me a great deal of very useful infomation about the NZ music scene (they love dub, I love dub-hurrah!).
Yesterday we set off fairly early, doing a little detour to the PuPu springs which were lovely- the photos can't really do them justice, the water was so clear and there was this amazing blue underneath the surface. Then on our way out of Takak we picked up a german hitcher and then took him on our ridiculously long detour via the largest hole in the southern hemisphere...we thought we would just be able to pop and see it, but o no- first there was a 40min very slow drive down a gravel road (which Roger-the man who rented us our car- was very explicit about saying we could not go on...haha-screw you Roger!), then an absurdly difficult and long walk through a forest and over very sharp and high rocks (I was wearing flipflops-fool, fool that I am). Though was the forest where they filmed the Chetwood forest scenes in Lord of the Rings, so that was another rather exciting element...It was a very exciting hole though- big, very big. Ross was scared like a little girl.
We decided not to feel guilty for taking our hitcher on such a long mission because not only did he get a free ride to Nelson but he also farted a lot in front of us while we were walking in the forest (especially dangerous when trying to scramble over rocks) and also in the car.
Well, that's all for now folks!
Love to you all as always...xxx
