Howdy!
In Golden Bay at the mo- did our glacier hike in Franz Josef, which was incredible- the glacier is enormous! we hiked for about 6hours, it was great doing something really exhausting, meant I felt less guilty about all the food I've been eating (massive drives have resulted in almost constant snacking). We were so lucky with the weather (not the case now-raining quite a lot up here)...Franz Josef gets rain 5 out of 7 days, but it was beautifully sunny for our hike, which meant the views were amazing...took a ridiculous number of photos of ice.
Next day we drove from Franz to a lovely little place called Punakaiki which is famous for it's pancake rocks and blow holes (which were hilariously rubbish- just big waves hitting big rocks! but then it was raining really hard and we were very inappropriately dressed- yes mother, I should have bought a rain jacket, but now I have an emergency poncho!). Stayed in what has to be one of the nicest hostels on earth- little place called Te Nikau which is hidden in the middle of the rainforest and it was just so pretty and the perfect place to sit around listening to the rain in, eating, reading and drinking lots of beer...
Yesterday we did a massive drive from Punakaiki to Golden Bay, from the rain to the sunshine (though now the rain has followed us-boo), and last night we went to an open mic jazz night and again drank lots of beer-hurrah! We are staying here for a couple of more days- going kayaking in Abel Tasman national park tomorrow, then heading down to Nelson then over to the north island on sunday! Am very excited about that- we only have a few days till Anna and Ross have to fly home, but we are going to cram in white water rafting, zorbing (rolling down a hill in a big ball) and a skydive! Ross is hilariously scared about the skydive which is good cos it is making me all sensible and brave!
Am having such a lovely time here- can't believe I've been away for over a month now- Australia dragged quite a lot, but the last week and a half in NZ have completely flown by...getting very excited about Asia. I've changed some of my plans now- no longer going to go to Bali because I want to have longer in Thailand than I had originally planned and it also allows me to stay for a bit longer with Jess and James in Sigapore...
Lots of love, Rose xxx
