We left Noosa and headed to a place called Hervey Bay which is nothing special its just a gateway to Fraser Island where we spent the night. We went for a little walk down to the beach and chilled out down there before an early night. We were up at 6am the next day to pack our bags for Fraser and we also had a safety briefing as lots of tourists have died whilst on Fraser by crashing their 4x4 or rolling on the soft sand. We were put in a group of 10 people who we were going to spend the next 3 days with cooking, driving and camping with. Our group had 6 dutch, 2 germans and us but luckily they all spoke english. On the way to Fraser we stopped off at the supermarket for supplies before heading to the ferry. Here i should actually explain what Fraser Island is..... its the world largest sand island and its also a heritage park. To be fair its just a huge sand bar which has formed over millions of years and has lush tropical rainforests and lakes on it and a tiny amount of houses. Roads are not roads, they are sand tracks with crazy inclines and holes! The only way to get around is in a 4x4. The ocean water is un-swimable as its a nesting ground for tiger sharks and there are an abundance of stinger jellyfish. But the beautiful lakes more than make up for that.
We caught the 20 minute barge across to kingfisher bay where we let down our tyres abit to get better traction on the sand and headed inland to a place called lake Wabby. The roads were nuts and every girl was shrieking over every jump and bump! But it was good fun. We went for a swim in the lake, its the deepest lake on the island but it was still nice and warm. The view was amazing as it was right next to a huge sand dune and was quite an unreal sight. After a short break here we headed to our campsite for the night on the beach. We had our own tent which was nice as they weren't very spacious and were supposed to fit 4 people...no chance. We had a bbq for tea and as expected we were soon surrounded by wild dingoes who wanted some food and managed to steal a whole bag of bread rolls off another group, after tea it was goon all around and games round the campsite as we weren't allowed a campfire. It was warm enough to sleep without a sleeping bag and the sky was so clear you could see every star in the sky, you could even see the milky way it was crazy, you had to see it to believe it.
The next day we were up at stupid o'clock which is 4.30am in case you were wondering, the only good thing about this is we saw the sunrise which was beautiful. The reason for this is that we were only allowed to drive 3 hours either side of low tide which happened to be right in the middle of the day that day. It was my turn to drive and we headed up the beach to the Maheno Shipwreck, on the way we spotted a dead baby dolphin washed up on the shore which was awful. We carried on up the beach to the north of the island, Indian Head and the Champagne Pools. On the way I thought of a game to keep us amused which involved driving over jellyfish that were washed up on the beach and seeing how bad they splattered as they were huge, the dutch girls weren't happy but I figured I was doing a favour as that meant less jellyfish to sting people. We spent a few hours in the champagne pools but didn't stay in the water for long after caz spotted a jellyfish right by us and not long after someone got stung. We were supposed to stay here while the tide went down but we got bored and went on an adventure to the other side of the island to a place called mathoomba. It was amazing with bright white sand and bright blue sea. We spotted turtles and dolphins and what we think was a shark, we again didnt spend long in the water after we found out about the sharks and crocs in the area!! After that we drove to the campsite for the night and it was caz's turn to drive. We stopped off at Eli Creek which was a nice little creek and lazy river then set up camp further south on the island. We had bbq again followed by more games and goon and of course another round of dingo watch.
The final day on Fraser was probably the highlight. we went to Lake Mackenzie which we had heard alot about and seen it on many postcards. It looked exactly like the photos we had seen and it was amazing, again bright white sand and bright blue water which is so pure you can drink it. We spent a good few hours here playing in the water before heading back to kingfisher bay to get the barge back to the mainland. While waiting we saw some more cool stuff in the waters including a huge ray (see pics). We had an amazing 3 days on the island and could have easily stayed for longer although a shower was in need when we got back and a bed wouldn't have gone a miss since we had to use bags of goon as pillows!! That night we stayed in Hervey Bay again and the whole hostel joined in on a dominos pizza night . Everyone was in bed early as the trip had took it out of us but was well worth it!
