Rory and Ben's 'Oz Travels'
Greetings from Down Under!
News from the Oz Travel team is as follows:
Since leaving Thomas Ranch, Kalaru, NSW, we have been on a 4WD expedition through the Bush. We left the tarmac and hit the dust! It didn't take us too long to get lost and we were back on the tarmac highway within half an hour! Our second attempt was more successful and we were now on the right track. After getting the car thoroughly coated in red dust we made it to our first campsite. Facilities included a"long drop" toilet. Unfortunately it had to used in the night. I (Ben) was not pleased about this as long drops are a favoured hide-out for Funnel Web spiders and being bitten on the backside by one of the most deadly spiders in Australia was not my idea of fun. So the whole procedure was conducted with extreme caution!
The next day we headed off to climb Pigeon House mountain which was quite spectacular (pictures attached) the Aboriginal name for the mountain is Didhol which means, translated literally, Woman's Breast. Capatain Cook took a slightly different view and said, quote: "looks like a reasonably square dove house".
Next we headed for Canberra, which is the capital.... apparently. ( Back to this suject in due course.) We proceeded straight for our campsite for that evening. We were joined by some noisy locals who were getting very drunk which was one of those situations where we decided if you can't beat them join them. So we went back into town, replenished our beer supply and joined in. By 12 o'clock Rory became very ill having been over-zealous with the VB (Victoria Bitter). I wasn't in as bad a state as Mr. Turnbull but the next morning was a Red-Eyed experience.
We headed back into Canberra on Sunday. Drove around and came to the conclusion that Canberra was a big city but they forgot to invite the people. It may have the largest aluminium structure in the southern hemisphere, but who cares really? (lovely as it is) So we promptly left heading for the blue mountains. Glossing over a less exciting period, we pick up our journey in the mountains heading in the general direction of Sydney. Then the rain started and just to make things that little bit more Scottish, and homely, an unbelievably thick fog descended as well! Driving was now nearly impossible as there was a bonnet in front of me and then just white-out. This made finding a campsite like finding a needle in half a dozen haystacks. We gave up our hopes of finding our campsite after 2 hours of driving around and headed for Sydney.
More tales next time,
Much love Ben and Rory
