Day 27 - Geneva
Sarah and I cooked our new favourite breakfast today, 'baconandeggsallinthepantogether' (we haven't got a proper name for it yet), and it set us up quite nicely for the day ahead. A day of walking...
We walked along the river first, and it was beautiful. Geneva is such a lowly place, although it appears you need to have money to be here. As we strolled along, we could see the jet d'eau in the distance and it looked very impressive. We crossed the river on the worst bridge ever. I am not a big fan of bridges and this one was awful. There was cars going across it and it was wobbling, I could feel it under my feet. I had a bit of a nervy-b and stormed right across. To calm my nerves after the bridge, we went to McDonalds and got a Snickers McFlurry. I have enjoyed this little McFlurry tour of Europe, there's been all kinds that I've never seen at home. Snickers was up there with the best of them.
We then walked through to the old town, saw the arsenal and cannons, then arrived at longest bench in the world. It was a pretty long bench to be fair, I felt very small sat in the middle of it. We could see down over the Reformation memorial wall and we spotted a couple getting their wedding pictures taken. It was all very lovey and stuff but I bet her dress was filthy afterwards. Down the hill we went to the wall and we sat in the park for a bit, watching some kind of music festival that was going on. After a cheeky nap on the grass, we wandered through the old town to the cathedral. It all just looked exactly how I pictured Switzerland to look. We found our bearings with the map and ten found the flower clock. This was quite impressive, a giant clock made of flowers. I can honestly say it's the only giant clock made of flowers I've ever seen, and I think there should be more of them.
Back to the river and we walked right out into the water to around to the jet d'eau. This was terrifying. We were basically balancing on a little brick wall and people were flouncing past with dogs and prams. Daredevils everywhere. I thought I was a goner. Then when I was trying to get a picture of the jet, some man kept gegging in front of my camera. Not happy. I gave up in the end and half of my pictures look like he has a 40ft jet fountain coming out of his head.
We went a bit further along the water and had a cheeky little paddle in Lake Geneva. It was freezing so I didn't last long. We were now hungry, the hunt was on.
Turns out no one in Geneva eats on a Sunday. Nothing at all is open. We ended up in a cafe that gave us a menu but didn't have anything in that was on the menu, and when we did find something they had in, they just went to the chippy next door and brought it back. This was not the culinary experience we had become accustomed to. We were a tad disappointed. On our way back to the hostel we bought chocolate to get change of our 50CHF notes (yes, we are in ANOTHER different currency) and then got on the tram. There were some creepy men on the tram who made us feel a tad uncomfortable, they kept staring and we didn't have a clue what they were saying. They got of at our stop and one of them asked Katie if I was her sister. Y'know cos we look proper alike...
Still no wifi when we returned. To add to this, my phone is not receiving messages so I feel completely cut off from home. To make matters even worse, the new series of Downton Abbey starts tonight. This is not good. We have spent the last hour sat on the bed setting the world to rights and moaning about the wifi. It's probably time for bed now. On a brighter note, we are off to CERN tomorrow, and we are rather excited about this. If there was ever a time to pretend we are clever, it's now.
Ps, mother if you dare tell me anything about Downtown Abbey I will never do you another ps.
