Day 17 - Vienna
When Midge Ure wrote 'Vienna', I'm not completely sure he had been here. Vienna certainly doesn't mean nothing to us, in fact it's quite the opposite. We are head over heels with the place.
Our day began with some epic bacon rand eggs, as every good day should. We then made our way to Museums Quarter and went to the Kunsthalle. Here we browsed original Klimts and Rembrandts and felt oh so cultured! Being the classy laydeeees we are, we web on to the Habsburg's Treasury and saw some unbelievable things. It was an eye opener to how the other half lived. Crowns, robes, a ridiculous amount of jewellery, and all kinds of holy relics. These made us giggle. They had a supposed thorn from Christ's crown, some wood from his manger, a piece of tablecloth from the Last Supper, some wood from the cross Jesus was hung on, St Annes arm bone and my personal fave, John the Baptists tooth. From the looks of it, John the Baptist was a sabre tooth tiger. Despite these things, the collection was amazing. The Habsburgs were clearly rolling in it!
We mooched into the centre and this is where my life changed forever. I had Toscanella. This is chocolate choux pastry filled with orange cream and profiteroles. Oh my word, it was damn good. The girls had Sache Torte which looked good, but no where near as good as mine. I'll be hunting that stuff down when I get home, I'm telling you. Ange you best get practising with your choux pastry. A bit further down the road we came to a park, and here we found Mozart's statue. After a quick photoshoot with Wolfy, we set off again.
We stopped at an Aldi on the way back to the hostel and this is where we became true travellers. We sorted out tonight's tea, tomorrow's breakfast and tomorrows dinner all for €16. We were thoroughly chuffed with ourselves. When we got back to our hostel we discovered we had a room mate, a Parisian lady in her late 40s. She seems very lovely and was chatting to us, but gave nothing away. This was not good enough for us. We have decided that maybe she has been divorced for a while and has now just decided to get away for some 'me' time to maybe find herself a new man on the continent. We think this is a suitable story for her and we are pleased with it.
After making our own tea, Dee and I went back to the room to get some washing and discovered the sixth, and final, bed has been made up in the room. We have anther room mate. Our room is complete. We are now sat in the bar scouting out lonely travellers who could be our new roomie. We think they are male because there's a lot of singular male travellers about. One has dreadlocks, we hope it's him.
Tomorrow we are going to explore the centre of Vienna a bit more, and possibly get to the Danube. Tomorrow evening, we are off to the Opera. We're going to see Verdi's 'Don Carlos' and we are rather excited. We may look scruffy, but we are cultured Viennese ladies at heart.
Ps, mother I hope you aren't too upset being back at school whilst I'm waltzing around Vienna. It's hard work here, honest, you'd probably hate it...
PPs, Girls I hope you all LOVED Vegas and I cannot wait to hear all about it! Don't be too sad that you're home now, I'll be joining you in 17 days! Expect postcards soon...
