After our eggy bread breakfast we took a bus to Ayutthaya which was once the capital of Thailand; mostly destroyed by the Burmese it has many ruins to explore.
As our bus was heading to Bangkok, we got dropped off at the side of the motorway. They have motorbike taxis everywhere here but we didn't fancy our chances on the back of a motorbike with our bags on. Luckily the bike drivers had a pickup truck so they gave us a lift in this. We arrived at Tony's guesthouse and were welcomed by the Thai version of Louis Spence. This was our cheapest room yet at 200 baht (just over £4) and looked ok. The shared bathroom wasn't great, it sat above what we thought was a big pond but once we had used the facilities we released all the sewage just drained straight in to this. It was huge and filled the space under our room. Many Thai buildings are on stilts, lucky really. We didn't expect to get an en-suite cesspit for 200 baht.
After dropping off our bags we went for a wander and bought our train tickets as we heard you have to buy them in advance here. By the time we returned we were dripping in sweat. This was the hottest place we had been and our room was baking, opening the window and putting the fan on was little use. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, not the best food and very spicy.
After a warm night in our room we had breakfast and hired some bikes. We spent the day exploring the ruins. They were pretty impressive, many looked like they were still falling down as you can see from the photos.
We found a great place for lunch, a small local restaurant with great food. A chicken dish with rice was only 30baht (65p). We have found that the small local eateries have much better food than the posher looking restaurants and hotels. Due to this we took a trip to the night market to get dinner; it was difficult to tell what was what. Most of the food looked fishy so we stayed clear of that but we saw some sausages which looked like the big bangers you get at home. We bought a few of these plus something battered on a stick (maybe chicken), and some pork and chicken kebab sticks. The sausages weren't great, more like sausaged curry. The battered stick may have been chicken but was grissely and may of had some chicken feet in but the kebabs were great. Feeling hard done by we went back to the hotel and had some pancakes and fritters with a cold Chang.
