Greetings to all and many apologies for my lacksadaisical attitude towards updating (okay so it may not have been necessary in that sentence but I bloody love the word lacksadaisical!) This is a rather sneaky update since I am sitting in the balmy 27 degree night air sipping on lemonade so you may have guessed that we are no longer in Japan and have swapped the chills and organisation of Tokyo for the chaos and heat of Thailand. However, for the sake of posterity and because I really want to bore you all I will fill you in on the many happenings of the second half of our whistle stop Japanese experience.
We took the train to Kyoto from Tokyo (the word fan in me LOVES that these are anagrams of each other) and desperately attempted to spot the famed Mount Fuji-Yama from the window but much to my disappointment we were unsuccessful. The journey and ever essential faffing around took longer than expected hence we didn't arrive at our hostel until 4 ish and only had time to drop our bags and go for a quick explore before it got dark. The hostel was nowhere near as nice and cosy as our previous one and it was to be our first experience of the proper shared dorm room of backpackers tales. Luckily it was to be a good one as we were in our 8 bed room with 3 lads who turned out to be from Norwich and who were also fans of the great 'Norwich Puppet Man' much to Tom's delight. (Look him up on facebook if you are unfamiliar with this legend) Myself and Tom went for a couple of drinks to check out the Kyoto nightlife however at approx 10 of your English pounds for each round of 2 drinks this was a little extortionate for a frugal budget and we could only stretch to one before sneaking shamefully off!
Day 2 in Kyoto was super action packed, starting with a walk to Kiyomizodera Temple which was beautiful and had great views of the city. We then walked an absolute mission of a walk to find the location of our calligraphy and origami course! In a gorgeous traditional Japanese style house we met Tomiko the loveliest old Japanese lady dressed in full kimono and she helped us to draw our own traditional style Kanji paintings. Tom was annoyingly talented at this and despite my previous Japanese experience it was definitely his and not mine that Tomiko was going into raptures over! He of course basked in the glory of this and gloated like a good'un. We then proceeded to make a whole selection of various origami creatures and useful bits. Tom was very proud of his jumpng frog and penguin and I was super impressed with my cute little box and photo holder. Tom struggled much more with this so I of course got him back for his previous smugness with my nimble origami fingers! Aha an origami empire here I come!
Day 3 consisted of a day trip to old capital Nara which is filled to the brim with old monuments and temples and more interestingly from Tom's perspective thousands of wild deer which roam the town. The main attraction of the town is Daisetsuban a huge hall which contains one of Japan's foremost sights an enormous Buddha which was definitely pretty impressive. As predicted although we dutifully walked round the whole of the park the most fun thing of all was the incredible tameness of the many deer which were not only not at all scared uf us but actively sought us out and even bowed as if requesting food! The sheer number of them was mental and Tom filled his camera full of gazillions of pictures of them!
Our hour is up on the computer now but there;s still more to be told so I will update again as soon as I can. Hope all is well in rainy England..ahaha I'm so mean!
Love
Roisin & Tom
