Yesterday a fellow volunteer, Anne and I decided to treat ourselves for Christmas and go to the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor for afternoon tea. We knew that Raffles was a very upmarket hotel, but it was still something else to walk in past the plaque with 5 gold stars and into the luxurious lobby area. We were guided into 'The Conservatory' by some porters dressed in typical Khmer costume (imagine an oompa lumpas costume made of silk) and seated in a lovely table by a window overlooking the very impressive pool area. Afternoon tea consisted of a typical cake stand full of mini savoury rolls, scones and mini cakes, along with a never ending supply of tea. We had tried to dress for the occasion, imagining the normal clientele of Raffles, but we definitely looked as though we were trying too hard in an attempt to fit in (which of course we were!). By the end of the experience, although rather full, we weren't ready to go home and so we moved to 'The Elephant Bar' for a cocktail. Due to there being a rather extensive drinks list we thought we should be a bit adventurous and try something new, but as soon as our drinks were put on the table we rather regretted this decision. Anne had ordered a Brazilian Mango Donut, an odd concoction of spirit and mango juice put into a glass that actually looked like a donut, which was in turn put into what can only be described as an ornament! I ordered an Apollo 8 - Galliano, vodka, blue curacoa and cream - which, although it was in a normal cocktail glass, looked like watery toothpaste and tasted like it too! However by the time we'd swallowed down our "lovely" cocktails we truly had had an amazing and unforgetable five star experience (complete with touristy photos!).
