And so it begins......
Ok, so a little background. I spent the last year working in Canada on a 1 year visa, over in Vancouver. I had the best time, including a stint working on the Olympics at the end, which was amazing! I'd had such a good time I didnt really want to come home, so I began looking into alternatives and stumbled upon a working holiday visa for Singapore. I'd never heard of this before, unlike Oz and NZ, so I was pretty intrigued and did some research. Its seems to be very new and I couldnt find much evidence of anyone having done it before. At first this put me off, but the more I thought about it the more it sounded exciting as I would be a bit of a trailblazer and could do something not many seem to have done before. So I took a deep breath and applied.
The application process was very straightforward and within a week I had my initial acceptance on the program. I've since been in touch with the tourism board and a company who are beginning to organise a scheme to go out and work in Singapore in a placement capacity, and they were very helpful in getting me on track with what I need to organise. So whilst I have not got a job or a place to live as yet (!) I have some leads into both these areas, including some appointments with rental agents and recuitment consultants shortly after my arrival. I'm flying tomorrow and I couldnt be more excited!
So if this sounds interesting to you, as a serious option or just light reading, follow my progress over the next few months through this blog. I aim to write pretty frequently and I hope to give you all a flavour of what its like to set up a new life in Singapore, intitially on a wing and a prayer! Over the next 6 months I'm hoping to find interesting work and a good place to live, and intergrate myself into local life, for example I'm keen to find a football team to join as soon as I get settled in. I'm also wanting to maximise my time by exploring as much as possible, both in Singapore and the surrounding area such as Malaysia and Indonesia. So hopefully there should be some excitement in here, along with day to day life.
I hope I've intrigued you enough to check back in with my once I arrive and begin my adventure!
Cheers
Ralph
