Sunday morning, 6:00 AM, Roch and Brenda decide that today the early bird will catch the worm. We leap from bed, get dressed and head out into the brisk 19 degree morn. After a short soongthaew ride, we arrive at our destination, the Muang Mai market. This is our first trip here at this time of day and we find the landscape to be quite different from our other visits. We first notice that all the vendor's stalls are filled to the brim with produce. Next, although even we find the air to be cool, we realize that some of the vendors are dressed for February in Yakutsk. And lastly, although the market's bustling, the usual late day crowds have not yet arrived, making manoeuvering through the stalls much easier.
We left on this hunt with high expectations of very successful foraging. I carried my Farpoint 40 on my back and Brenda had her little day pack with her. We weren't disappointed. After scouting out our options, we began gathering our bounty, stall by stall. A half kilo bag of brocolli florets, a dozen small mangoes, a 50 baht watermelon, 3 bunches of bananas, 4 packages of jackfruit pods and an 8 kilo case of mandarin oranges. We decide we have enough to last us a couple of days and begin looking for a soongthaew to take us home.
Suddenly, Brenda spots the fruitarian equivalent of an 8 point buck! Whole jackfruit crying out to be taken home and eaten. The vendor had only 3 available and we settled for the mid-sized one that weighed just 7 kilos.
With backpacks and arms filled, we returned home with our trophies and gorged ourselves on a huge banana, mango and orange smoothie with 4 or 5 mandarins for dessert.
How much did all this produce cost us? The equivalent of $26.37 CDN.
I've posted a couple more photos in the Muang Mai 2 album.
