Today we used our newly acquired bus passes to bring us to the Tropical Fruit Farm, located high in the mountains about 35 kms outside of Georgetown.
Once we arrived there, we were struck by how much cooler the air was at that elevation. As a bonus, a constant breeze kept us even more comfortable.
Entrance to the farm was 40 Ringgits, about $14.00 each and included a guided tour of the farm and an all you can eat sampler of the exotic fruits grown there. Before we left the hotel this morning, the owner told us we should arrive there hungry to take advantage of the buffet and of course we heeded his advice.
The farm has carved out 25 acres from the tropical rain forest for their crops and have planted about 150 varieties of tropical fruit, many of which are not indigenous to Malaysia. Unfortunately, many of our favorite fruits are not yet in season, but we nonetheless were able to see many of the trees either in bloom or beginning to bear fruit.
The tour was informative and we both came away with better knowledge of the fruits we eat. Who knew that banana trees die after producing only one bunch of fruit or that cutting the pineapple fruit from the plant kills it? We also discovered a few new fruits that are grown only in Malaysia that we found to be quite delicious.
After the tour we were directed to the farm's retail shop where they were fermenting fruits to produce an enzyme drink whose flavour profile resembles good quality apple cider vinegar. We were given samples of 6 different flavours, all made exclusively from the organic fruit grown on the farm. They were all very good, but at $70.00 a bottle, we decided to pass on buying any.
From the store we were led to the fruit buffet, a table filled with serving trays of tropical fruit, specifically, watermelon, starfruit, pineapple, guava, honeydew, papaya, coconut, passion fruit, dragon fruit, sapodilla, abiu, mango, jackfruit, water apples, oranges and pomelo. We filled our plates at least 4 times and emptied the jack fruit bin twice!
With new knowledge, full bellies and smiles on our faces, we bused back to Georgetown to prepare for the evening's festivities.
