Apparently we missed the excitement during the night. Almost everyone was awakened at 1:30 a.m. with their tent shaking. All thought it was an animal attacking their tent. It turned out to be an earthquake and Phebe and I slept right through it.
We headed to the airstrip saying our last goodbyes to a large herd of zebras, wildebeests, giraffes and warthogs.
When at the strip we had to cross the runway to go to the pit toilets.
The plane was very small and Linda sat in the co-pilot's seat. It was great as we took off and could see the animals below scatter. The on hour flight was not too bad. It was bumpy in a few spots but we flew close to the ground and could see lodges we had stayed in and Maasai villages.
In Arusha we stopped for last minute shopping, though I did not buy anything.
We drove through the town and saw all of the businesses in full swing.
We turned onto a dirt road to go to our day rooms. The area was very lush with banana plantations but the road was terribly bumpy. We continued for several miles. When we finally arrived the cottages were cute on the outside and set in an English garden setting. The rooms on the inside were not great.
We had lunch and then returned to our room to repack and take a short rest.
We departed our room for the 45-minute drive to the Mt. Kilamanjaro Airport. From the time we left our room until the time we arrived home would be a VERY long 34 hours.
