April 14, 1994
After two years of planning and hundreds of hours of researching guidebooks and train schedules, we are ready. The day of leaving for a 6-month European adventure has come. I have made most of the details including hotel reservations, the booking of timeshares, purchases of Eurail Passes, health and accident insurance, small amounts of each foreign currency and planned a detailed itenerary. Pat even kids me that I already know the names of cab drivers we may encounter.
The adventure begins however, not too smoothly. Dad arrived to take us to the airport. Fortunately, we got there 2 1/2 hours early. We were told we could not be checked through to Madrid because we did not have visas. I called RCI and spent 1 hour on the telephone with them while they called the Spanish Embassy to get the mess straightened out.
In the meantime I left my book "Europe 101" and my "Genealogy Helper" on the ticket counter in Phoenix and miraculously, the stewardess in Dallas called my name because someone had found them.
We did not get much sleep on the plane.
