Hello One and All,
We finally managed to make our way to Kuala Lumpur after battling with ferry and flights and we loved it very much. We would have loved to have seen other places in Malaysia but day trips to the local highlands were ridiculously expensive and we were vastly running out of time to take enough of a break away from the city and do this ourselves. Settling for 4 days in Kuala Lumpur was great though and we highly recommend it.
Our hotel was right in the heart of China Town - as soon as you walked out the door you were directly at the markets where they were selling anything and everything for dirt cheap. This was a great place with fantastic atmosphere, seeing all the westerners barttering for pennies for handbags and watches fallen off the back of a lorry. Great food here, where we ate above the markets for sooo cheap!
Everything was so close so we did a lot of walking around the city and soon found our way to some of the famous landmarks, such as the KL Tower and Petronas Towers (pictured). Under the KL Tower there was a conservation jungle area so we got to have a walk through dense jungle, right in the heart of the city centre! The Petronas Towers had a handy shopping mall underneath them but was also surrounded by a lovely lake. One night we treated ourselves to a pizza in a restaurant by the lake underneath the Petronas Towers - loverly! One morning we also got up early to queue for free tickets to go up to the skybridge between the Petronas Towers which had great views... if it hadnt have been raining : (
Other sites in Kuala Lumpur were the National Art Gallery, Little India (a street like China Town, but Indian), the Lake Gardens (picturesque park and lakes just outside of the city) and the Batu Caves (also outside city, Indian shrines kept inside massive caves atop of 247 steps manned by a gigantic gold statue). All in all a great few days in Kuala Lumpur and our favourite city so far.
Early flight to Singapore for one night but managed to see most of the city in that first day. Much like Kuala Lumpur, everythings in walking distance but probably not as much to see and do, though unlike KL nothing is free so can be very expensive here. We walked through the city and found a nice park, and walked to the harbour front where they have an outdoor theatre in the evening (unfortunately this wasnt on the night we went but we managed to watch a live band in the lobby instead). We also walked to the War Memorial Statue and the Fountain of Wealth which is the worlds biggest manmade fountain (though more impressive at night, quite plain in the day). We also went to Raffles Hotel and Steve partook in drinking a Singapore Sling and eating peanuts (chucking the shells straight on the floor, as is tradition). This day was topped off by eating a beautiful indian by the Fountain of Wealth. On the final day we chilled out before our nightmare flight to Oz and got chatting with a local guy whose whole family were fanatical Liverpool fans, nice guy though and refreshing to meet a Liverpool fan who didnt want to mug us. Singapore = nice place, but very expensive and not masses to do.
We're currently in Australia now and will update you when we next get a chance (and money, its not bloody cheap here!)
Hope all's well and everyones ok. Dont forget to keep sending us news, its always nice to hear from people.
Love and miss you all
