hey folks! i am currently in new zealand but i am primarily going to be writing about my travels in fiji... i got behind partly because there aren't very many oppertunities to get on the internet (on some islands the electricity cut off at 11pm!) and partly because i was too laid back for my own good! But here goes...
our 10 hour flight from LA to fiji was pretty uneventful... steph managed to sleep almost all of it... she managed to bagsee a whole row of seats for herself on account of the flight was only about 40% full. in comparison, i slept for about 20 minutes.
when we landed in fiji we had to get out of the plane via a set of stairs to the runway as, and the captain told us this, some trainee had broken the boarding tunnel. we were then suprised at how warm this country was- even though it was 6am and the sun wasnt up, i was boiling in my jeans.. it was about 22 degrees c. the airport was nice... made us laugh to see grown men- grown men in uniform- wearing skirts... handling our luggage. you dont know how funny a man in a formal shirt and skirt looks till you go to fiji...
so yeah we get greeted by our tour operator with a big ''BULA!'' and a shell necklace. we then have to wait around for an hour for our driver to come pick us up. on the way to the hostel, the driver made several stops to carry out his own affairs, which we thought was an obvious difference to bus drivers in the UK. we wanted to stock up on food and sun cream so the driver drops us off at what is clearly his mother or aunt's store as we drove past several large markets only to stop at this tiny store with out of date stock... my suncream bore the date 2001 on it... and needless to say i got burnt using it... anyway...
the hostel was different to what he had previously experienced in that it was more of a low budget resort... it had its own bar and travel center. we still had to share a room with 8 other people but whatever.
not much to say about the hostel... we spent the day there and we had a nice meal. next morning at the crack of dawn we had our free breakfast and got the coach to the yasawa flyer... the boat on which we were going to be cruising the yasawa island group in. we decided to go to the island furthest away and work our way back down.
