Round the World 2006
Hi all!!
So sorry for not being in touch over easter, i hope you all hand a great time and i bet you had more easter eggs than me!! We decided not to bother with the eggs!! I believe the last time i contacted you i was in Hervey Bay having withstood 3 days on Fraser Island. Well since then I have done so much, it seems so long ago! First things first im in new zealand!!
We left Hervey Bay and went to Kroombit Cattle station, which is in the middle of no where and is 10 000 acres big! Me and Steve jumped on a couple of horses and went and mustered goats of a mountain, this was for a goat rodeo!! In the rodeo we lasooed and tackled goats, it was incredibly funny!! I then decided to go for a ride with the owner on his motorcross (400cc 4-stroke!!), it was insane, he is a ex-pro and we were hitting huge jumps at 90km/h! Absolutely loved it! In the evening we had a camp dinner of beef and cracked whips prior to getting tortued by the nmechanical bull! We then headed through rockhampton to Airlie Beach, stopping for a spot of lawn bowls along the way! From Airlie beach we headed out onto the whitsundays, we chilled out for a couple of days prior to departure. In Airlie beach they have a wicked public lagoon that we just messed about in, and went out most nights! We left to walk to Abel Point Marina early on Tuesday 28th March, we met our crew and fellow sailors! We set sail on the seven seas on our incredibly nice boat, it was a 90ft tall ship!
We were sailing for 3 days and we had an awesome time, we snorkelled and saw turtles, fish i didnt think ever would exist, dolphins, reef sharks and some beautiful coral! The food we had on board the boat was some of the best food ive ever had, we had a chef between 14 of us and she was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! I slept on deck one night but was delighfully woken up at 3am by a spot of heavy rain!!
We left Airlie Beach the day after ruturning from our voyage, we headed to Townsville, from where we caught a ferry accross to Magnetic Island. It is a beautiful little island, we saw wild koalas in the trees, fed rock wallabies and stayed in the nicest hostel on the beach!!! All in all a very nice realxing 24 hours! We headed back to the mainland before continuing on our journey to mission beach, we saw some of the damage that had been caused by the horendous cyclone. The worst hit was a small town of Innisfail which had so much damaged caused, flattened houses and all. Nature at its worst.
We headed into Cairns but we stopped at AJ Hacketts Bungy site, where like a true nutter with issues between my ears i jumped!! Did a 50m bungy jump into a small pond, i dont know how i did but i can definately say i have never been so scared before!!
We had a week in Cairns, we had some great times, end of tour parties and general fun!!! We said our farewells to a member of our travelling group, mike armitage who had to return home. We spent 2 days in Cape Tribulation which is north of cairns, it is an amzing place where the ocean (great barrier reef) meets the jungle!! It is a beautiful area and a great place for us to relax!!!
We then left Cairns to fly to Brisbane, from where we caught our trabsfer to Christchurch! We arrived at Base Backpackers in Cathedral square late at night, and went out for a wlak around. We spent 5 days in Christchurch chilling out, we visited the cathedral, botanical gardens and the art centre!! But i was hit with a tonsilitus, which didnt go down well, but im eventually coming to the end of why antibiotic course!!! We travelled through the Southern Alps to Westport, where I went for a jetboat, it was a good laugh but so so so cold!!! We then continued to Lake Mahinapua where we saw seals, blowholes and pancake rocks!! We had a good night all dressed up in big bags for a party!!! We contiued on our travels to Franz Josef where i tried to do a heli hike, we were all set and about to hop in the chopper, but the weather failed on us!!! So i had to do a 8 hour hike the following day, it was amazinf walking the glacier, we saw ice formations like none other, blue ice, ice caves and we even squeezed through tunnels!! It was awesome! We stayed in a well nice place with a lush hot tub that got a lot of use after the day on the glacier!! We then went to Wanaka, which is a very nice town on a fabulous wake, here i did a skydive!! It was the best thing i've ever done, travelling at 200km/h, falling 180 feet a second, for 60 second. The experience of jumping out of a plane 15 000ft above the earth, 4.5km!! Is like nothing you can begin to explain, trully magical!!!
I am now in Queenstown the adventure capital of new zealand, so naturally i have a bust few days ahead of me!! We have the following activites organised:
134m Nevis bungy jump out of a cable car
tandem handgliding
canyon swing
luging
river boarding (white water rafting on a bodyboard!)
And we are also hiring a car on monday for three days to travel around the south of the souther island, to see the magical milford sound especially!!
I am having an amazing time, and i hope all is well with you!
Love Rob
